Posted: 11:24 - 14 Aug 2017 Post subject: Completely New to Biking and Just Need Advice... (F/18/UK) |
|
|
I'm a girl, 18, I drive a car, I'm going to uni and I want to switch to a bike. I've always wanted to ride a bike as my dad used to race them and it's in the blood But I've never been financially able or old enough until now. I need to do my CBT and buy a bike. I'm looking at 125's but not sure what to get - really like Honda CBR's but does anyone have other suggestions?? Not sure whether to get finance or just buy one? Obviously if I choose finance my budget will be a lot higher.. Just need general help as I don't know what I'm doing. Also concerned that if I buy a bike thats far away from where I live my first proper ride on it, or on any bike really will be a long one, so not sure how to deal with that.. Any help would be appreciated and I'm completely open to suggestions so please just give an honest opinion Thanks for reading!
Also, what is considered high mileage on the kind of bike I'm talking about? Probably gonna start posting adverts soon to ask if you guys think these are worth looking at!!
Could someone post a list of potentially suitable bikes and then others add to it? So far I've looked at Honda CBF/CBR and Yamaha YBR!

Hard to judge without knowing your circumstances, but I went down the CBT and 125 route and wished I'd just done DAS and bought a bigger bike straight off.
At 18, you cant do your full license, but depending on how long it is until your 19th, it may be worth looking at A2.
If you're set on a 125, my advice would be to buy used, they command a bit of a premium and are more likely to suffer damage. Something simple and 4 stroke (YBR125 for instance) is a good bet. It depends of course what your budget it without finance.
Do you have any friends or relatives who could go to look at it with you and ride it home for you? When you're first learning you'll find riding quite tiring, so setting off for much more than an hours stint isnt a great idea IMHO. The alternative is to collect it with a van or whatever, but at 18 you wont be able to hire one, so again, phone a friend. |

I've got a 125 rotting away in my shed, cos someone bought it, then did a cbt, then rode it once and changed their mind....

No to finance, in a year (or however long until you're 19) you'll be able to take your A2 tests, you'll be bored of the 125 before then. I'm not a fan of fake sports 125s but if you're going to go down that route the CBR's probably the best shout.
First rides are tricky, don't do what I did, which was to buy a lemon in an unfamiliar area then have to call someone to rescue you. Take someone with you who knows about bikes, forum members in the area might be able to help out (they might even ride it home for you).
If you end up riding it back yourself maybe see if there's somewhere quiet for you to practice a bit, before heading out on major roads. It isn't that difficult it's just best to get some confidence building rides when you start, which normally means heading out on Sunday mornings when it's quiet.
Don't do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIfcvC3e3KY |
