PostPosted: 11:24 - 14 Aug 2017    Post subject: Completely New to Biking and Just Need Advice... (F/18/UK) Reply with quote

I'm a girl, 18, I drive a car, I'm going to uni and I want to switch to a bike. I've always wanted to ride a bike as my dad used to race them and it's in the blood Very Happy But I've never been financially able or old enough until now. I need to do my CBT and buy a bike. I'm looking at 125's but not sure what to get - really like Honda CBR's but does anyone have other suggestions?? Not sure whether to get finance or just buy one? Rolling Eyes Obviously if I choose finance my budget will be a lot higher.. Just need general help as I don't know what I'm doing. Also concerned that if I buy a bike thats far away from where I live my first proper ride on it, or on any bike really will be a long one, so not sure how to deal with that.. Confused Any help would be appreciated and I'm completely open to suggestions so please just give an honest opinion Smile Thanks for reading!

Also, what is considered high mileage on the kind of bike I'm talking about? Probably gonna start posting adverts soon to ask if you guys think these are worth looking at!!

Could someone post a list of potentially suitable bikes and then others add to it? So far I've looked at Honda CBF/CBR and Yamaha YBR! Smile

Hard to judge without knowing your circumstances, but I went down the CBT and 125 route and wished I'd just done DAS and bought a bigger bike straight off.

At 18, you cant do your full license, but depending on how long it is until your 19th, it may be worth looking at A2.

If you're set on a 125, my advice would be to buy used, they command a bit of a premium and are more likely to suffer damage. Something simple and 4 stroke (YBR125 for instance) is a good bet. It depends of course what your budget it without finance.

Do you have any friends or relatives who could go to look at it with you and ride it home for you? When you're first learning you'll find riding quite tiring, so setting off for much more than an hours stint isnt a great idea IMHO. The alternative is to collect it with a van or whatever, but at 18 you wont be able to hire one, so again, phone a friend.

I did the 125 route albeit on a scooter (PCX125). For me I started riding to save money on my commutes so wasn't too fussed about what I rode.

Anyway I found my time on a 125 invaluable as I had zero experience prior to my CBT, in fact the first time I had ever mounted a bike was on my CBT. I did the full 2 years of my CBT on a 125 before taking my DAS. Helped a lot with roadcraft and general awareness without having to worry too much about watching the right wrist.

Do your CBT and get on the road I say. See how you like it and whether it is for you. You never know, you might just decide it's not quite what you had expected.

Also, agree with above that you should buy used. If you shop around you can pick up decent bikes for cheap and when you're done with it sell it for almost what you paid.

Haven't read the post, so not giving advice. Just loving the a/s/l in the thread title. Haven't seen that shit since my AOL chatroom days of the mid nineties. It made me laugh.

You father surely can guide you.

Other than that do CBT first and see if biking is really your thing.

Get the old man to help you and check over any potential purchases for you. Chances are he's stoked that his daughter is getting interested in bikes and will want to help you get a decent safe bike and hopefully a fun one too.

Before all the above though, have you scoped out your digs and the area at uni, to see if there's somewhere safe and secure to lock it up, and also on campus too? Getting the bike at all will be pointless if you cant keep it safe, or even if you don't need it to get around?

Also bear in mind if your away from home, the bike won't really like being sat still and unused for a couple of months or so between rides home to visit your folks.

Turns out he is not stoked at all and is incredibly worried about me buying a bike! He is not too keen on helping me find one and not really giving much advice 😕 Thanks for the advice though! I am going to a uni that is aet 10 minutes out of town so I will be using my bike a lot at uni

get the CBT done, as already said, you may find it not what you expected it to be, or you may absolutely love it.

Once that's out of the way, then start bike shopping and, simply wrap your dad round your little finger with "I'm getting a bike, don't you want to help find me one that's not going to shit it's gearbox all over the road"

or words to that effect Very Happy

No to finance, in a year (or however long until you're 19) you'll be able to take your A2 tests, you'll be bored of the 125 before then. I'm not a fan of fake sports 125s but if you're going to go down that route the CBR's probably the best shout.

First rides are tricky, don't do what I did, which was to buy a lemon in an unfamiliar area then have to call someone to rescue you. Take someone with you who knows about bikes, forum members in the area might be able to help out (they might even ride it home for you).

If you end up riding it back yourself maybe see if there's somewhere quiet for you to practice a bit, before heading out on major roads. It isn't that difficult it's just best to get some confidence building rides when you start, which normally means heading out on Sunday mornings when it's quiet.

Don't do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIfcvC3e3KY Very Happy

Worth mentioning that some bike schools do 1hr taster sessions just to get you on the bike so you can see what it's like before going for your CBT.

Otherwise just get your CBT done ASAP and then see how you feel.

Perfect, you'll be bored of the 125 by then, and you can book a cheap winter A2 course at a training school.
