I rescued a lad off the hard shoulder of the A2 yesterday, struggling with a broken down Keeway. The bike was in good condition but had just conked out. Cranked over okay, made half an effort at starting but that was it. The guy said it had been down on power and hard to start recently.

Checked the fuel supply, and the bowl drain. Plenty of fuel in the bowl and it was kinda firing like it was run out of fuel so I figured blocked jet, bad air leak or closed up valves. Chucked the bike in my van and took him to my place. Un-screwed the carb top, pulled the slide and the problem was immediately apparent - the needle was missing. Popped the carb off, tipped it up-side down and out falls the needle. Looked inside the slide and there's the w-clip and needle circlip (e-clip) in the bottom of it.

Turned out to be a loose needle clip. It was such a loose fit I think it had hopped from one groove to the other (causing the reduction in power as the needle dropped lower) until it came off the end and the needle dropped into the main jet closing it off completely.

A quick squeeze with the pliers tightened the clip up nicely and he was on his way again in 20 minutes.

The poor guy had no chance. His mechanical knowledge is so weak I gave him a 8mm socket and mini ratchet to un-bolt the seat and he used it like a spanner. I had to show him how the ratchet worked Very Happy

I had that on my first Ducati, the W clip had split, leaving the needle sat in the main jet emulsion tube. Fixed it with a matchstick jammed each side of the needle in the slide, got me to the (1967) Dragon Rally and back no bother. Trouble is, I've not seen a box of matches in decades......

I once had to show a tyre fitter how to get a tyre off of a split rim, but only after a good ten minutes watching him struggle and chuckling to myself. Almost as funny as watching a petrol pump attendant walking round and round my military Landrover trying to find the filler cap.

Wasn't necessarily him who did the deed, perhaps?

You think that's bad. I had one that didn't know how to use cable ties. He somehow put them on backwards, so the securing locking part was facing the plain side of the tie. As soon as you moved anything the tie just fell apart. I never thought it my life I would have to show someone how to use a cable tie properly.
