Seeing how many different zones I travel on each day goe thinking about how relevant sat nav apps are for bikers. Tonight for example Waze selected my best route home would take 1 hour 40 and in the end I did it in about a hour. This may we'll be because i travel most 20 speed zones at 35 to 40 where there is clearly no school etc, only a little more for 30 zones and I'll do about 75 on motorways as I feel like I'll get blown over if I go any faster sometimes.

Anyway what's everyone else's personal speed limits , i.e. What speed do you actually travel at in 20,30,40,50,60 and 70 zones?

And finally what's with all the guys on bikes I've seen this week who are doing 60+ consistently through 50 mph average speed zone with cameras?

20 - 20
30 - 30
40 - 50
50 - 65
70 - depends on the conditions but anything really

(All the above are actual speeds - not indicated.)

Edit : missed your question on average zones....
I do 60+ if they are reverse facing cameras as wait for it .... no front numberplate Smile

I wouldn't try to ride anywhere where there are 20mph zones, might as well cycle in that case.

I ride slower than I used to, but I don't believe in re-graded 50mph single carriageways that used to be NSL roads. In a 50 or NSL road depending on conditions and hazards I'd do 60-70mph indicated.

On motorways or dual carriageways I tend to stick at 70-80mph.

I don't find anywhere in the UK these days that's quiet or fun enough to do over 80mph in any vehicle.

Most of the really fun roads to me are the narrow lanes, where you'd struggle to do 60, let alone 80 for more than a few seconds.

I guess a new R1 etc, would be a bit wasted on me.

Confused Do you ever leave the road you live on? Saw 80 plenty today, and today's ride was about a gentle bimble around the hills mostly. I think anything bigger than a 125 would be lost on you Laughing

It's a good job I did have a 125 in my shed until last week then! Wink

I've been toying with the idea of getting a big block 200cc engine put together with some nice tasty bits for over 35bhp, but that might be a bit excessive for my needs? Laughing

I've seen your local just down the road ride pictures, and they all look like something on a calendar or from a magazine photo shoot in dramatic hillside locations. Laughing

My typical rides would be urban and local country lanes of which there's a good network of locally to me. I might venture far and wide to Stratford-upon-Avon or Bridgenorth though one day if I feel like putting in some serious miles!

I think what you've forgotten is how quickly some bikes can get to silly speeds, and how quickly the brakes can scrub those speeds again. You don't need much room to achieve those speeds on such bikes, it's virtually instant. Of course, it isn't necessary to have a bike that will do that to have some fun, but it is an important part of it for some of us.

And my local down-the-road rides to the Lake District are a 30 mile run just to get there before the ride 'proper' begins. That bit tends to be done at a more, er, interesting pace Twisted Evil But even when among the hills, there are places where 80 is easily achievable.

Agreed. I was coming back from work today from Manchester on a big wide 70 limit dual carriage way. Not in a rush so was sticking to the speed limit ish... then a Ferrari popped out next to me on a roundabout and booted it. So at the next roundabout we both gunned it for fun. Smile it was very enjoyable. Lasted about 35 seconds before we hit other cars then he pulled back to the left lane - I overtook and settled back into normal driving again. It was ace.

Lovely car btw. I've no idea what Ferrari it was but I'll upload the video tomorrow and I'm sure someone will tell me.

Oh for sure, away from the traffic in nice parts of the UK, there's roads were 80mph+ would be so easy and almost natural on bigger machines that are fast, stable and well braked as you say.

I've not ridden any such bikes for 9years. Its just I can't be arsed with speed or risking 3figures in the UK anymore no matter how easy or safe it might be.

I still think back to 12-15years ago, knowing mates with big bikes, who used to go on Sunday rides and hit 160-180 on Shropshire and Welsh roads every week as the norm. I know the Albigaris's of this world still do, but speed has largely passed it's attraction for me now. If I rode a good bike on your local peak District roads with the spectacular scenery, I'd want to spend more time day dreaming looking at the hills and landscape, than concentrating on stringing together a good flowing focused ride tbh.

We all enjoy it different ways. Can say myself I'm partial to slowing down coming over a rise with spectacular scenery dropping off left and right. 👍

Avoid London then. Islington, Camden and the City are all 20 mph boroughs Mad

Yep, that's largely how I approach it these days. Those places aren't so much about the riding (although negotiating gnarly little mountain roads has it's own fun quotient) as the scenery. But then that's what Wales is for, as you said Laughing

But here's a dilemma for you. Take a look at this picture:

https://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b550/nicknicklxs/DSCN0107_zpsqoivqopd.jpg

I have no idea what the actual speed limit was on this road. But what're you gonna do here? Have fun riding a brilliant road, or take in the scenery?* If you're going to concentrate on riding it, you won't be paying much attention to your speedo.

But say the speed limit was 60mph on that road. Much of it you can't actually do that speed on if you value your life. So the posted speed limit is not the major factor in how you ride it. So it's still all about conditions and hazards.

*The answer of course, is ride it more than once, sometimes to enjoy the views, and sometimes to enjoy the speed thrills.

Depends on traffic, visibility, population, road conditions, weather conditions, speed cameras, police presence, and whether I'm feeling tired or not.

I never stick to speed limits unless one of the factors above.

There's been huge wide open 40mph roads where I've done triple the limit just because it's stupid for it to be a 40, but I've done 20 in 30s when I had to etc.

North Yorkshire has been slow as hell on the uptake of speed cameras so I would generally go as fast as I see fit in most cases. Roads are quite twisty though so not much uber speeding done anywhere really.

I like to ride at a safe speed for the road, i.e. the speed that I've seen marked police vehicles do on it, with or without lights or sirens.

After all, these are the crème de menthe of drivers, so who am I to question their judgement?

Typically about 10mph higher than the posted speed, depending on conditions.

Nowadays my limits purely revolve around keeping a clean(ish) licence, or at worst maybe risking 3 points if my judgement about detection lets me down.

The velocometer should really just be labelled "Proceeding" and "Stopped (probably)".

But, but.. average speed cameras. My route's flooded with them, pain in the rear.

In regards to OP I'd be checking what data these apps record. My typical house brick sat nav, when plugged into the computer, provides quite the account of what speed I was doing at what time and where on the map and it's just a basic car nav with hardly any functions. No idea how similar phone things are. FYI is all.
