OP is prolespec though, will be keeping it outside. That might be a novel experience for an Enfield.

There's an old boy across the road who, from what I can tell, doesn't use his garage.

I might ask if he'll let me use it if I bung him a few quid a month.

I've had to keep my bike outside for about three years now and I've had to learn to not cringe every time it rains/there's a frost.

They could replace the motor with a block of cheese and you'd still be on here telling us how reliable and amazing handling it is

It would be, so long as you made sure the Chinese mice on the wheel inside were adequately watered too.

I'd be cringing more at the thought of the bike dealing with the overnight encounters with Scrotus vulgaris urbanus more than the results of moisture.

That's always at the back of my mind.

But I'm in a village in Warwickshire - the scrotes round here are few in number, and they seem way too tame/cowardly to come onto my drive and play with the bike. (Here's hoping they stay that way....)

I would go and try and have a go on one at a dealers before putting my money down, unless you have ridden one before, or are you on a A2?

I'm on an A2 - is a dealer unlikely to give someone on an A2 a test ride?

And fair point. I've had a look at one or two but never even sat on one.

Not that many dealers about these days, and most of them have limited knowledge of the product which is a bit of a shame. Think you'll be alright test riding though.

Just don't go into it expecting a modern bike and levels of performance. People kept saying to me, for 3 grand you could have bought this 600 or that 650, more power better brakes etc. That's not the point.

A2 is a full license for that bike.

But apart from the Bethnal Green - Shoreditch adjacent - boutique, the dealers tend to be Dodgy Dan's Multi Marque (and Chips) outfits now. Worth asking, but don't expect a big fleet of registered and insured test bikes.

Depending on what part of Warwickshire you're in, you might find that my local dealer isn't that long a trek :-

https://www.cooperbmotorcycles.co.uk/specialists.php

Always has a couple of demo bikes ready to roll.

In February 2015 we took a used 500cc Bullet in part exchange. It was a cold but bright sunny day & I decided to use the bike to visit the sandwich shop in the next village some 3 miles away. Before I was even half way there I decided I loved this bike & ended up taking a massive detour that had me out on the bike for a couple of hours! As a lover of big, fast modern sports bikes I simply didn't understand why this bike felt so special. I just could not explain to myself why this bike made me smile & made me feel so good. It was unlike anything I'd ever ridden before and on paper it's vital statistic's just didn't compete with any of my usual favourite bikes. However, I loved it!

It was only after I'd advertised the bike & spoken to some Enfield enthusiast's the answer came to me. The Royal Enfield makes you smile because it is so basic, so innocent that it takes me back to my youth when all of my riding was a mix full of learning & fun. The handling is compliant & sweet enough to be hustled along enthusiastically - but it doesn't make you want to get your knee down. The engine responds directly to the rider & it takes throttle control & a learned skill to get the best from it - but it isn't too slow nor will it ever intimidate you. The bike has a wonderful sound that frankly anyone with ears will enjoy - it is simply impossible to be offended by these bikes.

Having become a firm Royal Enfield fan, by April we became official dealers.

If you buy one, I guarantee you will become more closely connected to it than any other bike you may have had before. The charm will get you & then you will find yourself truly loving it!

Pretty much sums up how I feel about it; and why it fits the bill so well in what I was looking for, when I bought it.

Yup, that's it, exactly. I find myself taking detours more often on the Enfield than any other bike I've had since my first 125. It's got that same kind of raw engaging eagerness to it.

My Enfield (and Ninja) are more entertaining than my Nazi Tractor, despite being much less competent on paper.

We don't ride on paper though, unless you count Smiler's crisp packets.

Is there a single review out there that doesn't call the NC range 'dull', 'purposeful' or 'gentle', 'easy going'?

Life's too short.

The brakes, the seat, gear change, the suspension and foot position, the vibrations are almost unbearable. It was entirely an experience from 1950 possibly even 1910.

I did like that it had a proper front mudguard not a pointless one, but that's about it.

But... that's the point. Every yard (yes, yard) you progress is both an experience and an achievement.

If I wanted to just arrive with no memories of how I'd got there, sure, I'd get an NC700, or an Uber.

No, that's the problem. It's a pile from the 1950's masquerading as transport. You might consider it character, I'd consider it to be shite I don't need.
