did my cbt on one, practical bike if anything, if you drop it will cost fook all, 100ish mpg or something, light etc but very basic which has its advantages when it comes to maintenance

i think maybe 70 is a little optimistic? more like 60-65?

grab one cheap, use it to learn on before you take your A2, sell it for pretty much what you paid, or perhaps more come summer time Smile

I would get the Honda CG125 personally, I own a '05 model and it's the best thing i ever bought. Easily capable of doing over 100mpg, very reliable, easy to work on, 65MPH and over with a screen. Have a look at both anyway and see what you think. I do like the ybr Smile

I have an '05 CG as well, they are basically the same bikes as the YBR and its equivalents. May not be your first choice for styling but I get at least 88mpg a week, I lowsided last year at 20mph and didnt need to spend a penny.

I've also chucked 14,000 miles on in the last year and it hasn't missed a beat. Speed wise mine tops out at 72mph, average 60-65mph.

Good if you want something economical, reliable & a bit of good fun. If you're just in it for the sports bike styling then you wont find it here.

If you want a "fast" "sporty" 4 stroke, yamaha yzf-r125 or hyosung gt125r is your lot, but both sacrifice some reliability & mpg, and will cost an arm and a leg.

Or do your test and be OTR for less money on a real bike?

Yeah, get the yzf-r125 it's only £3000 Very Happy. Have a look at the CBF125, they're cheaper then the yamaha.

I managed to get 70 on the GPS on mine on a couple of occasions but that's only when all the forces of the universe have combined in my favour - mostly expect to top out at 60-65 and cruise happily at 55. All you can do to change the looks of the YBR is fit a screen and engine bars. It's a no frills, simple reliable machine. If you want something that will get you from A to B and do it every time, then get one. If you want style, don't get one. It's cheap to run, insure, tax etc and quite easy to work on, as I'm discovering, with parts being readily and cheaply available. Unless you skip the 125 option altogether, do your test and get something bigger (as pyro said here), it's a case of are you prepared to spend more money because you care what others think of you on your bike? Looks are a matter of opinion anyway. With everything, you'll get people who like it and people who don't. I happen to like the look of the YBR. Thumbs Up

If you get a new one, you spend the first 600 miles running the engine in which is very boring and slow as you don't push it beyond something like 6k revs.

Prefer the looks of older CGs, but the YBR isn't a terrible looking bike.

What are you riding at the moment?

the YBR is a good bike, a friend recently done lands end to john o groats on theres along with me and a few others on big bikes, they had no issues doing the 2200 miles in 6 days on the YBR and would do 60 mph no problem but wont hit 70 without a steep hill and tail wind lol

great first bike

My OH had a YBR125 and it does exactly what a leaner NEEDS it to do. It goes and it stops. It has all the elements a bike needs to function.

It might not be as fast as a RS125, or as cool as a Ducati - but its for people to learn / commute on. For that, its in the top few for me.

If looking cool is your only concern - you are screwed on a 125 anyway.

I have one, i enjoy it, it doesn't look stupid (i'm 21) I can hit 70 with the wind calm/behind me without much issue, indicated 76 on the rev limiter is top though.

Think you're trying to 'look cool', not going to be an idiot and wear trackies this time round are you?

I think it's better than a ped, sure it's not a 'busa but at least it's a proper bike and it instantly makes you 100% cooler.

Good bike Thumbs Up

Just ride it hard! Dont be scared to kick it up hard to get it in gear.

I could only get about 55 - 60 on it but I am a fat bas though.

Bought mine new for £1800 with free insurance sold it for £1500 with about 800 miles on it lol (could have got more but I was trading it in) not bad though tbh seen as I got free insurance too.

Get one, get it in black - looks better!

The YBR looks nice enough and looks like a proper bike. It may not be a sports model, but no learner legal bike is going to have the performance you probably want.

If you want something that looks the part of a sports bike then get a Yammy R125 or a Hyosung GT125R. Both look the part, tho I think neither will perform all that much better than the YBR. The Hyosung is the size of a 600 and not far off the weight of one, even tho its got a 14HP V-twin.

Getting either new on finance would be crazy, save that for your first proper bike if you must. Save your pennies and buy second hand I'd say.

Yes it's a 4-stroke, looks is a matter of opinion I wasnt all that keen on my CG when I got it, but it started to grow on me and now I love the styling which migrates well into its bigger cousins, CB500's etc.

If all you're in it for is the sporty look then it's either spend way too much money on a yzf-r125 or a gt125-r or do your test and get a bigger bike

If your worried about how you will look on a learner bike then it suggests to me you are into biking for the wrong reason, because it looks cool? Could be wrong though so don't shoot me down, that's just the impression I am getting Wink

The problem you face is you want something that looks like a 'big bike' but the truth is every 125 looks the same even with fairings. By the same what I mean is small and out of shape.

Most everyday people WILL NOT even notice what your riding because lets face it, unless you own or like motorbikes you never notice them. People who aren't into bikes also don't have a clue about what is 'cool', generally they won't know the difference between a Kawasaki and a Ducati as every bike will look the same.

The flip side of this is that people who are into biking will realise you're a learner and won't judge you off the bike you a riding. If anything by riding a YBR or CG you are showing you are serious about biking because you have chosen a solid learning machine.

If you're planing on doing your test soon, then you may as well get a cheap older CG, ace through the test and get shut.

Just remember, everyone has to start somewhere Smile

^^ I agree with throttle.

I currently ride a YBR and its a fun little bike. People who know nothing about bikes seem to think its a cool classic bike. I was going to get the Varadero to begin with for the cool factor but the price you pay for the looks is ridiculous. The money you save can put your through the DAS.

Once you get used to the bike you will probably start enjoying it. I love my little bike, and it hasn't put a foot wrong yet. Plus you will get the same money you spent on it back so in a way its just a free bike to learn on with an £800.00 deposit.

It's true it wont really exceed 65mph but it can beat all traffic at the lights, and its small and agile for filtering. Plus it will teach you how to ride as it will give you more time to react when something is going wrong, rather than having a faster bike in the same circumstance that will throw you off.

All the best,

Daf
