Wallabies in the Oxford? Shocked

Am I the only one to have never heard about this? Any of the BCF'rs live there, or visited and seen any?

I saw plenty in Ozzyland, but had no idea there were some in the UK! Tempted to rake a ride and see if I can spot one.

Always a shock when you see something you associate with a warmer climate.

I was once matched for speed by an ostrich the other side of a fence when trail riding in the Peak District. Then up the road there were a load of llamas mooching about. It aint right, even the local professional notherners were wearing jumpers indoors at the time.

Sort of related, I stumbled upon a field full of Alpaca whilst walking the dog nearby in Compton Dando.
Proper double take moment, not least because I hadn't seen one before or heard of them. Some googling was
done when I got home.

Some parts of Australia are not that different to here at least in Winter.
They certainly won't have any problem surviving eating similar stuff to deer.

Many years ago, on the way home from the pub in the car, my wife was driving and we hit a wallaby. This was in South Oxfordshire, probably about 15 or so years ago. It was definitely a wallaby - I saw it clear as anything and I was not especially drunk.

Thinking

There's a Rolf Harris joke in there as he's only 20 miles away from Oxford and wallabies must be easier to tie down than kangaroos.

Yes- and it ain't just wallabies. From experience I can say you can occasionally see weird shit when camping out in the sticks Oop Narth. Trough of Bowland comes to mind.

No it's not as far out as Clifton. About 40 mins across fields from the (Excellent) Compton Inn
where I have eaten many a superb Sunday roast. Looking at the map it's near Woolard. I think this place is connected to the alpaca somehow.

No idea why I typed Clifton, unless it was some sort of auto spell thingy.
I meant Clutton!

Sammy Millers motorcycle museum in the New Forrest has a few alpacas. Odd looking animals.

I hail from Dagenham originally, they're a bit thin on the ground round there. And I haven't been to South America yet.

I've always thought that placename sounds like some kind of countryside slang term for an elderly vagina. Very Happy

Yeah, but Dagenham had a whale, that puts a posh llama in its place. I think it lived at the Fiddlers.

Still does, I stayed opposite this particular one last weekend. Unsurprisingly adj to the Moby Dick pub, on Whalebone lane.
The Fiddlers is barely recognisable to me these days but I lived nearby for a very long time.

I used to live near Robert Clack then up by the Eastbrook. Can't believe the amount of traffic if I go back now.

There are wallabies around, about 10 miles east of me. We get wild boar over my way.

I think meeting the latter on a walk would be a bit more a scary Smile

Wallabies are a fairly common sight around Lenham and Ashford in Kent - story was a local had some for a personal collection, which he allowed to escape and they colonised the locality.

Also a surprisingly large number of flocks of parakeets all over the place, there was a fairly large one in one of my local parks, when I lived in South London.

I'm seeing more parakeets here in NW Kent, they seem to be spreading out further. I told a friend about them and she didn't believe me.

There are quite a few farms that keep alpacas near me as people use their coats to make alpaca wool clothing and charge many pounds for. Its softer Thumbs Up
