Hello, I am doing to full category A licence in a couple of weeks. a nice opportunity has come up for me to buy a Relient Robin. now after doing some reading up I read allot of divided comments on if they are legal on a full bike licence passed after 2013. Id like to clear this up. has anyone who passed their licence after 2013 driven one on just a bike licence. and managed to insure one.

There's a difference between driving and insuring one and having a licence to drive one.

As I understand it, something that size requires grandfather rights or a wheelchair.

The law changed and you can't drive one on a bike license any more I think.

I'm not sure if that's right. I think it was you only couldn't take a test in one.

I was talking about micro cars in my other thread, not a three wheel robin.

OK, let's clarify - if you took your test after 19/01/2013, you can drive a Robin on a full A bike licence, if you're over 21.

Before buying one, you might want to find out where your nearest Class 3 MOT test centre is though, there aren't many of them.

Oh yeah, the usual bollox - the car was weighted, fitted with an oversized wheel on one side and a modded diff, so it turned over with almost no provocation.

Reliant 3 wheelers are pretty fair game, but not for that reason.

Compared to almost anything, they are pretty slow (0-60 14ish seconds, 85mph flat out) but also up to 70mpg.

Get one old enough and free tax, or, if you're a real glutton for punishment, Reliants/Bonds can be MOT exempt.

The biggest handling issue is rear end breakaway, when they really want to pivot around the front wheel, so if you lose the arse (which isn't difficult) they can be a bit of a challenge to get back.

Good point, well made! Would be fun to throw around a field though. For a bit anyway, before the novelty wears off.

I realise they were taking the piss but they're unstable, my cousin turned over in one going through a big puddle Confused I would not want to have an accident in one.

I had one for a few years in my youth. That was on a bike license as well.

The engines in those were made by Coventry Climax. Little ally racing engines that you could get a multitude of tuning bits for at that time.

Mine got turned into a trike over night as I was being stalked by a police woman who hated me, knew I was driving it with no tax and insurance ( normal behaviour in the 70's Whistle ) had already been round my flat and the shop I had then, but didn't know about my lock up.

When she caught up with me it was just a chassis. 'Drive this Officer, no, never. not me.' Cool

Ditto the above, things was different in them days.
Many bikers got married, had kids and it was an affordable option
to a sidecar outfit.( had that too)
Nowadays though? nahh. OK for a ten minute larf maybe but they're fucking horrible things. I hated mine.

I have one, it drives fine, people who bothered to attend the BBQ will attest that it's quite a good offroader. No they don't flip at the drop of a hat, just don't drive like it's a sports car. The are OK on the motorway if you stick to 60mph and don't go out on a very windy day as that makes them wander around as they are so light. They are pretty noisey at high speed, so not great for long trips. Insurance was a bit high, sureterm direct was the cheapest I could find.

All three wheelers are on the A licence, Reliant Robins, Rialto et all and were moved there in 2013. Anyone with a bike licence, no matter when you passed can drive any three wheeler.

There is no licencing difference between a car or bike based trike, that only makes a difference to the MOT.

If anyone you asks is old and mutters about the B1 licence, ignore everything they say.

From the DVLA website

Quote:
You’ll need a full category A1 motorbike licence to ride motor tricycles up to power output 15 Kilowatts (kW), and a full category A motorbike licence to ride trikes with a power output more than 15 kW.

Does reverse still need blanking off though? It used to.

I'm pretty sure that was an urban myth. Non of the car based trikes I have ever owned (and I have had quite a few) had their reverses blanked and the insurers never asked about it.

My Goldwings had reverses as well.

Looks like it was an old law changed in 1963! Wink

Reverse Gear:

Up until 1963 only people with a full car licence could have a reverse gear on a 3-wheeler. Motor cyclist licence holders with no car licence had to have the reverse gear blanked off if it was fitted. The change of law in 1963 means that anyone can now have a reverse gear on a 3-wheeler.

Yup.

Some of the early Bond Microcars got around this by having the front wheel turn through 180 degrees, so the car could turn in it's own length, but they were all pretty light, so pushing them backwards wasn't a major issue.

You just needed to make sure you didn't park them facing downhill into an immovable object.
