Full Disclosure: I'm not a vlogger, and I have no intention of being an Insta-model.

I've been contemplating posting clips of stuff I see on my commutes to Instagram to share with friends/family and anyone else really. Problem is I don't have a clue on how to get a video from my Drift to my phone and then to Instagram.

Problem One: Clips from my Drift are really long and upwards of 2GB in size. I need a [free] tool to crop out the relevant clip, ideally 10-15 seconds long and make them small enough to email/quickly transfer to my phone.

Problem B: My iPhone only saves clips in the library in .mov format. Again, I need a [free] tool to convert .avi to .mov without losing quality.

Problem 3: Instagram only displays in a square frame, so now I need a [free] tool to crop the video framing or resize the video.

So, does anyone know if a magic tool that does all the above? Any tips/tricks I should be aware of?

many thanks Thumbs Up

Cant offer much help with the other problems, but Problem Three, I believe is no longer a problem.

If you click the button in the bottom left of the video, (in my picture, the bottom left button in the black square) it allows you to post the whole frame.

Cheers, Tracer helpful to know.

J4mes, I'm slowly becoming more aware of the risks associated with this project. I've placed various safety nets to protect me, mainly in the guise of my wife who vehemently hates vloggers of all trades!

Why do you need to use your phone? Put the clip on your PC trim then upload to instagram.

There are loads of free video editing tools floating about.

Just a heads up that videos are pretty unpopular on insta. Try to get still shots if you can, they'll be easier to process too - this is from a drift for example https://www.instagram.com/p/BWXLi5zhgPU/

If you're desperately set on video clips maybe a YouTube channel might suit you better?

And if you are married to the idea, keep it below 7-10 seconds! People have a very short attention span.

If I was doing that I'd use openshot. Add the .AVI file in, drag it into a track, crop it. Add any effects I want then export it in the format you want.

It's a pretty simple user interface showing each movie file as a bar on a track, you can watch it through, click on the bar where you want to cut it into sections and delete the unwanted ones, add in others etc. You can also add fades/transitions/filters etc (gamma is useful if you're in twilight/near dark).

You can add an edit an audio track in the same way.

I've found the zoom and slow motion functions take a bit of fiddling to get used to, they are much less intuative.

You can then export the file as pretty much any format and quality you want. The tricky bit is deciding which because there is a bewildering array. Worth making sure the initial "new" file in open shot is the correct format in terms of screen size/resolution for what you need.

I haven't looked but there may even be a preset "instagram" output setting.

Open source so download and have a play.

This. Although I do tend to ignore videos on Instagram anyway and go for the pictures. Videos (in my experience so far) tend to be adverts in disguise.

Boomerang sort of makes gifs that play without you clicking on them - you have to click on videos to make them play so nobody does.

Old thread but the spammer above has brought it up.

And I have a pretty good solution for doing all the things the OP asks about:

HandBrake: https://handbrake.fr/

I've used it to convert a fair few videos. It can convert to/from a lot of different file types, and can reduce quality and resize the video dimension to whatever you want.

Really great bit of open source software Thumbs Up

I just torrented Sony Vegas Pro 17. It's easy to use. I think I still have the setup file if anyone wants it.

Anyway slap the video on there, crop it if needed, add bollox effects (often need to adjust the video to higher brightness for phones tiny screens), render it, slap it on the phone, upload it to insta.
