Requirements:

HAZARDOUS TO HUMAN EYESIGHT. 300 lumen+ (real lumens, not Chinebay 5,000,000 rumens). The blindier the bettier.

UK seller. No 2-to-72 weeks delivery from Cathay.

Runs on 18650 or 3xAAA. Runtime doesn't matter, it'll only be used for seconds at a time.

Round body, 1" in diameter

Strobe mode.

Must not cycle modes when switched on and off.

Must not cycle modes when switched on and off.

That means two buttons: one to turn it on and off, another to control the mode, which must include a strobe mode, i.e. not a Nightwatcher 12W Cree, or one of the many, many 1-button knock-offs on eBay / Amazon.

Got that?

Can you deliver, BCF? Yes, Fireblade headlight, Torchpal® and so on. But can you?

If your planning on blinding someone could you not just throw some drain cleaner.

It'll be cheaper and easier to find

Have a look at 'Big Larry' (really!) available from various outlets.

^^^
I think it's to go on a toy gun, a work light probably won't be suitable. My LED Lenser TT ticks most of Rogers boxes but not all.

LED Lenser L7, except it doesn't have a strobe so you'll just have to wave it about.

Edit: I just noticed "300 Lumens" and wondered what the (to me) very bright L7 has. Less than half that! I also came across Candlepowerforums.com (a forum for torch nuts) which suggests that the plastic body won't draw damaging heat away from the LED like a metal case would. I think I could become a torch nut.

It will come from China but if you want a 'proper' torch you should look at Zebralight, Fenix or NiteCore.

Personally I find Zebralight the best in terms of quality. I have this: https://www.zebralight.com/SC600w-Mk-III-HI-18650-Flashlight-with-Neutral-White-High-Intensity-XHP35_p_179.html

You have me curious as to why one would need / want a torch such as this / strobe? With the need to such precision? What is will be the desired use? Just wondering?

If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand Wink

See CPF for further details.

@Rogerborg: racking my brains, but I think you'll have to cough proper money if you can't wait for China to deliver. The BLF A16 (from China but usually in stock and pretty quick delivery from Banggood) is very programmable so might do what you want but will need to be shimmed out to 1". Otherwise, if it is for a gun light, try proper firearms suppliers - you will also get a remote switch (which is very useful on a weapon) and a wallet-raping.

This. I don't spend money on drink, drugs, fags or escorts (unfortunately). But I love toys and gadgets. I've used the Zebralight a handful of times only. Mainly to freak the local cats out. A £15 light would do the same job but I can't have that!

Given that I've just dropped north of £200 on toy guns and toy gun accessories, I'm not really in much of a position to scoff. Whistle

Go visit Cotswold Outdoor to have a play with the various expensive torches and head torches they've got.

The LED Lenser XEO 19R looks like fun with 2000 lumens of blindness. Cool

You probably know this, but please please be careful with the 18650 batteries. Some torches will take protected batteries and some unprotected. Protected cells will shut down themselves when the voltage drops but unprotected will keep going unless the torch stops it. Make sure you don't over discharge any 18650 as things can go wrong when recharging. If using unprotected cells please ensure the torch has adequate built-in protection.

Don't cheap out on the cells or charger. eBay is full of fakes - a lot of rewrapped laptop cells.

"For modern high-capacity lithium-cobalt cells such as the Panasonic NCR18650B, the optimal open-circult voltage is about 3.6-3.7 V, which represents an approximately 35-45% state of charge. Avoid discharging batteries to below 2.75 V under load or 3.2 V open-circuit, as this will shorten their life as well. Discharging to less than 2.5 V open-circuit will damage the battery and compromise safety, and attempting to recharge a battery at an extremely low voltage (less than 2.0 V) can result in a fire."

Thumbs Up

I just use Chinese ultrafire on the air rifles, usually with a red filter.

That is of no use here. I'm just commenting to bookmark this thread...

Ultrafire would probably do if it retains the mode when switching off and on. Very few reviewers seem to cover this.

Not to your spec but I have an Ultrafire UF-H2 head torch which runs on a single 14500 cell. Claims 230 lumens on high mode. Also came from HK.

Reason I mention is it it DOES NOT CYCLE MODES WHEN SWITCHED ON AND OFF.

It has a single button. Click on, Click off. Hold down and it cycles from dimmest to brightest and back over about 5 seconds. It stays where it was when you release the button and remembers that setting next time you turn it on. Flashy mode takes three fast clicks and is almost impossible to do by accident.

Downside of this, it has a constant trickle of current draw to keep the setting memory. If you put it away for a couple of weeks, it'll come out flat. I get round this by loosening the top-cap slightly when I put it away but you do have to reset the brightness when you turn it on again.

That said, it defaults to maximum when first switched on.

Will also run on and AA at a pinch but will not singe your eyebrows.

I bought Fenix FD40 last year, and i too wanted a torch that didn't cycle with every powerup after owning a few cheap Cree eBay jobbies

The FD40 has focusing (which you may not want) but they do many versions in different outputs with/without focusing

Mine only has 1 button, but it's a 0.5 second press for on/off, and a single click to cycle modes, but crucially it retains the last mode you were in, i assume this will apply across the range of torches

https://www.fenixlighting.com/product/fd40-fenix-flashlight/

Sorry for the Yankee link, but it seems the UK site has replaced the FD40 with an FD41

Winner! 2 buttons, and the FD41 is the correct diameter as well. Brilliant, thanks, when I want a torch that costs more than the gun I'll go ahead and buy one.

Since I didn't mention price though, I award you one Internets. Thumbs Up
