If the reg is K157 YTF, I sold that bike in 2007 with 60000 miles on it for £500.

If it isnt that reg then the fairing is off that bike

Sorry for the late reply, pahahaha. No it's not, it's completely different.

I ended up buying the ZXR 400 and I'm glad I bloody did, it is a freaking machine, the only problem I've had is a few electric bits and bobs but that's it, all getting tidied up when I have some penny's to spare

But yeah, like I said it's seriously quick, it's had something done to it as I rode my mate's pokey ZXR 400 which struggled, and I'm not lying when I say this, it has topped 150 on the clock, and it sure felt like I was flying, I've calmed down now anyway, but the engine is completely mint; with an inspection. I can't wait for next summer. And when it goes off for a dyno and and some simple refreshed seals and carbs (Just because I want to have it pristine) I'll get it dyno'ed and make a topic in the build thread for it.

I believe you it showed 150 on a clock. Thumbs Up

Are you sure it wasn't 150km/h? That's fairly less. 150mph is about 240km/h, that's ZXR 750 (ZX7R) speed we're talking about.

I'm not saying you're lying, but it does seem odd, that your 1991 ZXR400 flies at 150mph. Thinking

Do you have the 180km/h or 115mph or even the 160mph or 240km/h speedo? The issue with the first two is, they don't even show 240km/h nor 150mph.

Good point about the 180kmh speedo on some grey bikes.
But I remember reading a PB road test of a ZXR 400 years ago, and they recorded 141mph top speed. 2mph more than they got from the KR1S 250.

Im happy to believe that, as though 130-135mph is the usual norm for 400's, everyone says that the supersport 400 class was always dominated by 400cc four strokes, and the 250's struggled to match them on fast tracks with long straights.

Yeah I honestly swear it's 150mph, if I get a hold of a camera I'll try again but I don't want to get my license fucked as last time it was risky.

It took a decent amount of time to get there and it didn't feel happy sitting there, the rev limiter is unlocked and raised as well, not sure on how much it's actually pushing out but I'd assume it's a fair amount. I have the 160mph speedo

Is the speedo driven off the wheel, or the engine? Stock gear ratios?

Off of the wheel, I believe it has stock gear ratios; that is one thing I haven't really checked.

10% legally allowable speedo error (I think) would put you at 135mph.
According to http://www.gearingcommander.com a stock bike at 13000rpm in 6th will reach 130mph.

Are we really having a discussion as to if a ZXR400 will do 150mph?

Really BCF?

Really?

A ZXR750J wonít do 150mph so you all need to stop drinking the koolaid.

No. No, we're not.

Feel free to join in with the speculation on why it might be showing 150mph though.

If it had been an earlier bike, I would have been inclined to say that Kawasaki clocks were notoriously optimistic at the top end at one time, but can't say I know if this was still the case for a model of that kind of vintage...maybe they still were?

My wild theory,

OP has JAP/EURO spec clocks with UK (MPH) face. 180km/h is about at the same place the 150mph mark is on the UK spec clock.

180km/h is very easy to do on any 400cc four cylinder. My CB-1 would do 195km/h with less powerful engine, without aerodynamic fairings.

A quick tell tale would be checking the ODO/TRIP actually show miles and not kilometers.

I'll have a check when I can (Updated: 48cm across, it's the stock 17" wheel)

It does rev out to 16000rpm if that changes anything. After looking over it more and more it gives me a feeling that it has atleast been raced once it it's life, race clip on's, 520 chain conversion, hyperpro steering damper, Domino Quick Action Throttle. There is something is fishy about it. It's also a Genuine UK Import

Maybe, but maximum power is at 13000rpm. www.gearingcommander.com suggests a stock bike could theoretically do 160mph at 16000 revs but really, does it have enough poke to spin that high in 6th gear on the road? The faster you go, the more power you need per mph just to push through the hardening wall of air.

I don't believe it's a stock bike, and I'll find that out when It gets stripped down next year. It honestly hit 150 in which I then realized the potential of smashing into a car that could pull out further down the road. Unless the chain 520 chain is making an the chain show a bit higher; that I do not know. I'll have to wait till I get a camera (Which will be in the summer of next year) and I'll happily return with evidence of my findings

I have an idea. If you have a smartphone with the GPS tracker, just download whatever ''gps speedo'' app, set it to record the maximum speed, put it in your pocket and go for a ride.

I tested some of these apps before, they do work. Thumbs Up

This way we're gonna get the answer with 99.9% certainty. My wild theory could actually make sense, given people import motorcycles to the UK all the time and to make the motorcycle more apealing to the UK riders/customers (or to pass the MOT, not sure if a km/h dial would be/was an issue at the time), changed the face of the speedo.

If max power is at 13000rpm, and yet your reaching 16000rpm in top gear, then it's geared wrong and could go faster.

I think your tacho could be as inaccurate as the speedo though, as I'd be extremely surprised if a ZXR 400 engine would rev that high anyway.

Racers remove the limiter and they get it to 16500/17000rpm.
This can also be done to road bikes, but pointless due to the lump needing to be rebuilt every 3months.

If itís revving to 16k on the clock then that suggests the CDI has been reblown or replaced. It also suggests you might get to do an external conrod inspection shortly.
