My sense of smell has returned after I had a bad cold a few weeks ago. It was wierd enough that during a cold I started being able to smell but it's continued long after the cold symptoms have passed. For about five years I've had virtually no sense of smell except for the occasional brief period maybe once or twice a month for ten or so minutes. Apart from the obvious aggressive brain cancer explanation what might be happening?

Cheers

1) are the smells that you are now experiencing correct? so orange is confirmed as orange by another person, ditto coffee etc

2) are the smells particularly strong? or subtle?

3) any changes in taste? stronger sense of taste? things taste different?

4) any ringing in your ears? changes in hearing? etc

No-one mentioned aids yet?

Strange after my accident , I lost a lot of my senses of taste & smell.
I never heard of people gaining more enhanced senses of taste and smell?

Did your cold/virus and the subsequent coughing dislodge something allowing you to taste and smell again?

All is normal. No change in any other senses.

There was a lot of snott expelled but nothing unusual for a normal head cold.

My old man had a brain haemorrhage a few years ago, and ended up causing damage to the olfactory nerve, resulting in complete Anosmia. This means he has no sense of smell, but more than that, apart from the tongue detecting Sweetness, Sourness Saltiness and Bitterness he now has no sense of taste.

Or its aids, obviously.

Any new meds recently?

Some can change the way you smell/taste, sometimes for the better.

It's always worth getting stuff like that checked out tbh.

Probably the chip weighing you down. Nice to see the sense of entitlement is 100% though. We'd expect no less.

Seeing as how OP has decided to go to the doctor for advice, I vote for a change of thread title to just say "I Smell"

If we could get someone to run up behind him and stick a post-it note on his back saying the same, that would be good.

I am not by nature a queasy person, and can deal with the sort of "queasy things" that life throws up from time to time without flinching much.

However, ever since I had flu about 20 years ago, very strong unpleasant smells make me wretch, or on rare occasion vomit a little bit involuntarily. Neutral Neutral

My latest theory is my loss of smell was due to inflammation of the olfactory nerves and the assault on my immune system by the cold virus distracted my immune system allowing the inflammation to reduce.

A little while back I had the flu, and for months after everything smelt rotten. Thankfully it eventually went away as it was not pleasant.
