Hello,

This is my first post, I've just purchased a CBR600 F4 and live near Nottingham. I'm trying not to spend too much on her just yet, but want to get her up to a standard.

I've just fitted a ram mount and got myself a waterproof case for my phone so I can use it as a sat nav. Had a few trips out into Derbyshire with the Mrs on the back, but unfortunately my sense of direction sometimes fails me.

I'm looking to wire a USB connection onto my bike so I can keep my phone topped up, but I don't want to drain my battery. I won't be riding much over winter (did that for a few years before I owned a car).

I'm looking to wire it up so it only powers up with the ignition. I have found two methods:

1) to wire up a relay which will come on with ignition live but offer the USB it's own dedicated power.
2) tap into an existing ignition live circuit and allow that to power the USB.

I'd prefer method 2 as it'll be a lot easier. My only concern is the extra power on that circuit I tap into.

My question is, would a USB socket which will only be powering an iphone draw enough power to cause issues on an existing circuit? I don't fancy burning out any of my existing wiring.

Thanks

Chris

Both options are equally easy. Dont be put off by the thought of doing things properly... Smile

Order the relay (a standard horn relay should do the trick) (and an in-line fuse)

Have a go.

Thumbs Up

And don't fuck with the switched live from the ignition. Pick a circuit you can work around/do without if it fails.

Here's how to relay. Photobucket images are still working for now but if you want them for future reference, I'd save them.

I have been told that before.. I haven’t looked through the wiring diagram yet but someone has previously suggested the indicators. I’d notice fairly quickly if they failed and could arm signal home.

Definitely avoiding ignition, headlight and rear light.

I’m not afraid of having a go, just don’t see the point in going for the more complicated approach if it isn’t necessary.

If it won’t burn anything out. I’ll probavly go method 1, but I’ll read through that relay one.

Thanks both

The bonus of the relay method of that it gives you a nice auxiliary power source for anything you add on in future. Want heated grips? You've got power ready. Heated clothes, wired intercom, additional lighting, second charger for the Mrs to plug her phone into to charge a camera battery, it all becomes easy.
