Sister in law has a Ford Fiesta 2002 model (mk 5), and has asked me to have a look at fixing her drivers side front speaker.

All other speakers appear to be working, and the drivers speaker doesn't seem to have any output at all (no crackling, dropping in and out or anything like that, just no sound at all).

My first instinct is door card off / head unit out... but I'll be honest I'm not really sure what I should be looking for or testing. Guessing continuity test on wires from head unit to speaker, if I can figure out which ones are which.

I have a multimeter, and I'm going to do some research on the head unit (connector pin-outs, removal tools, security codes).

Any advise on where to look or what to test appreciated.

Taking the speaker out may be the simplest, the drivers are often wired with spade connectors and one of these could have come off over time. If both wires intact you can test a driver with a battery, wire a pos and neg to pos and neg on battery, placing this accros driver terminals should cause cone to move in or out, if this happens then anddriver was still connected then you may have to look elsewhere.

Check the loom between the drivers door and the body of the vehicle - they often break here due to the movement of the door - drivers door is more common as it's used the most and so has the most movement.

It'll be under a rubber cover so you might need to pull it back to check.

Just remove the door card and unbolt the speaker, you'll probably find the speaker has disintegrated from wet weather, common feature on fiestas.

Took the door card off, unscrewed the speaker and discovered that it wasn't connected at all.

Fished around inside the door and found the speaker wire, plugged it in and its sorted..

Easy Thumbs Up
