I was just looking at a W650 and cannot see where it gets it's speedometer reading.

There doesn't look like there is any speedo gear in the front wheel and then I read in the workshop manual (posted below) that it says it has a non-contact Hall IC type speed sensor that generates pulses when needed?

Excuse my ignorance but can anyone explain to me exactly what this is, how it works and exactly where is it located on the bike?

Would be much appreciated.

Probably on the front sprocket. That's where the one on my VFR is.

The Falco uses the rear disc bolts as the triggers, principles the same. Every time a feric object passes the magnetic pick-up it generates a pulse. This equates to the rotational speed of the object. Easy enough to convert the pulses to a digital readout.

jjdugen I was referring to the W650 specifically.

It has a read drum brake, I cannot see any speedo facility there on the workshop manual (and I do not have the bike in front of me to find it).

stink so as in the front engine sprocket?

No, front final drive sprocket on the VFR.

If you think about it, it has to be somewhere after the gearbox or it would need gear sensors and wouldn't work with the clutch pulled in.

Thanks stink I think we mean the same thing (although my naming of it is probably incorrect).

I've found a thread (although I can't confirm its accuracy) that the speedo sensor on the W650 is found on the casing of the front sprocket.

Just for future reference, the engine sprocket is the one on the end of the crank that turns the clutch basket.
