Well i have decided to commute into work this morning, and it is the first time i have ever ridden a bike at 6:30 in the morning in cold/dampish conditions

First part of the journey was fine coming out of Chesvegas, then i go onto the bypass (NSL) and as soon as i'm up to speed, my mirrors start to fog up massively, to the point where i can barely distinguish headlights

Thought to myself, it's ok, stick to the inside lane and clear my mirrors when i get to the roundabout at the end of the bypass, but upon slowing down for the roundabout they started to clear again

So my question........ is this normal, or had i just ridden through some strange weather conditions, very light mist possibly

Bear in mind car mirrors have the exact same problem and are harder to wipe.

Been driving cars for 20 odd years, but never noticed it happen like this before, though saying that i have never garaged my car, and my bike currently lives in the garage, but i would have expected them to fog over as soon as i got it outside, not just when up to 70+mph and clearing again when slowing down

I remarked on this this morning in the car - I had cleared the mirrors and part-way through the journey they fogged again. A light twist of the mirror button deployed the mirror heaters and they were clear again. Cool It was, however, notable enough for me to mention it to my wife (in the car, at the time).

It is caused by warm moist air and cold air pockets

Ahh, might have just been some strange weather conditions then, maybe a perfect balance of temperature/moisture/wind chill causing the fogging at speed

Keeping the glass scrupulously clean can help, but I do miss heated mirrors on the bike Sad

Beat me too it. I was thinking when reading, this sounds like a problem for one of the Adams to solve.

Yeah, think i might keep a microfibre cloth in one of my jacket pockets for if it happens again, obviously only wiping them when i'm stationary Wink

Not that i will be doing much more commuting on it this year now the weather will be turning

I don't actually have commuting cover, but as i finish at lunch today and going shopping from work, i won't technically be commuting home, i'll be returning from a shopping trip Wink

It was an additional £100 for the remaining 6 months of my policy to add commuting cover when i passed my test and changed bike to the Hornet, on top of the additional £150 for changing from my old CG124

And no kittens were killed on my commute in this morning Smile

Bob Heath anti fog spray for visors helps slightly with mirrors also.

I don't usually have any mirrors anyway. Thumbs Up Actually, got some on my Honda at the moment, better whip them off, it's going green laning on Sunday.

Your bike will pass warm air out from around the engine at random in random places at different speeds, some of it will find it's way up past your mirror.

Never had this issue on my ZZR, the mirrors were so far forwards, right on the front of the nose fairing, my hornet they mist when I'm stopped but clear a bit as I'm going,

I just give them a wipe with a finger as they'll just mist again in a moment.

Use a urine soaked rag to wipe them down.

Ride all year round. Virtually all my previous bikes' mirrors have fogged on damp, cold morning (even the tiny bar end ones). To be expected in colder times. Thumbs Up

Keep doing lifesavers/over shoulder & wipe mirrors when safe with one finger...carry on.

This is going to sound silly but rub toothpaste into them honestly works for condensation, plus keeps the dentist away from your bike
