Uber licence will not be renewed next year as TFL found the company lacking in Corporate responsibility. They can still appeal so it will probably drag on for a bit.

You who live in London, did it work though? Did cars come straight away and were they cheaper than black cabs?

If so, I suspect mpd is correct. The amount you have to pay for your black cab license, car, etc. they probably were livid.

Yes. This is a political decision to appease cabbies. Cabbies have been protesting a lot and saying uber drivers are all rapists, ignoring they're pretty good at it too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Worboys

Uber is great, it is usually ~1/3 of the cost of a black cab.

I have gotten from Shoreditch at 3am to Hornchurch (16 miles) for ~£25. A Black cab would be ~£90

The cars are always modern and comfortable and the drivers polite friendly and smart. You always hear that uber are bad to work for. I normally chat to the drivers and often ask if they like working for Uber. The vast majority say exactly the same thing, they love it because they can work when they want and spend more time with their kids. The ones that were mini cabbies all say they earn more from Uber than they did with traditional mini-cabbing.

I reckon I've had about ~30 uber trips. In that time I've had 1 'bad' driver. He couldn't maintain speed was always off and on and made me feel ill, still I'd rather have gone on that trip than pay for the best Black cabbie in the world.

The only reason Uber is experiencing fight back is because of the RMT, it WILL put cabbies out of business, because it is a better service for less money.

IMO Black cabs are a relic, Uber is better in EVERY way for the punter.

Dunno how comprehensive that list is but it's interesting.

The people I've heard complaining about (working for) Uber all sounded like they wanted a steady job, which begs the question why don't they get a steady job Thinking

I agree about cabbies but I should state I have a burning hatred for them, for various reasons. Uber drivers never seem to know where they're going, but don't seem to be entitled c**ts like cabbies. It's a case of competition, this doesn't benefit customers, or the (40k?) Uber drivers. It's kinda crazy they can in essence put that many people out of work.

Probably a good time to buy a Prius though.

The main sticky points for TFL to suspend the license are:

- Its approach to reporting serious criminal offences.

- Its approach to how medical certificates are obtained.

- Its approach to how Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks are obtained (that is the new check for criminal records and such)

- Its approach to explaining the use of Greyball in London software that could be used to block regulatory bodies from gaining full access to the app and prevent officials from undertaking regulatory or law enforcement duties.

Theyre infinitely cheaper than black cabs, which are a total rip-off (inb4 they dont get to set their price, TfL dictate it to them, dont care - still a rip-off).

Whip out your app, tap-tap and "your Uber will arrive in 3 minutes". You know exactly how much it will cost, where they are, how long it will take, what car to look for etc. Wheras every time Ive tried phoning a normal taxi company its normally "oh weve got nothing, sorry" or "yeah but theres a 45 minute wait for the next one".

As for actual genuine black cabs, I think Ive used one once out of sheer desperation and had to remortgage to pay for the privilege of using one. Black cabs seem to exist purely for the wealthy who dont want to bump shoulders with the unwashed masses on the Tube and can afford them, and tourists who will use them once for the novelty of it.

Never had a bad experience with Uber, decently priced, efficient, modern, and has the benefit of working anywhere, a few times on holiday Ive used my uber app and it works, no need to faff about with the local currency, trying to phone Pierre or Hans and explain in broken English where you want to go, or figure out the local moon money currency.

Theres a reason that enough people are using Uber to be a threat to Black Cabbies, because its better and cheaper.

That's what f**ks me off about them, they're expensive to start with but still find ways to extract more money, such as taking the longest route possible or flat out ripping you off when you're drunk.

Addison Lee drivers have a much better attitude towards customer service, even if they do drives like c**ts (sorry hellkat Razz). People use Uber for a reason, I suspect the vast majority of people are in favour of them, but as usual it's about who bawws the loudest and it doesn't help when you have a corrupt political organisation like TfL.

She's busy washing cyclist splatter off the car Smile I assume it's good news for Mr Addison and Lee, although will they now feel the wrath of the cabbies? Thinking

I thought you picked up sailors down the docks for Addison Lee. Are you Ubering on the sly?

Clearly you have little grasp of the actual facts regarding life on planet hellkat.
Or are just being facetious.

Let me guess which one Thinking
Oh!
Both!

No surprise there, then.

The fact is that I work solely for Addison Lee at present. I do anywhere from 7-14 hours a day for them (on an average of 4 days a week). It keeps me busy enough to not need/have time to do anything else "on the sly", as you so poetically put it.

And besides, I like my sleep too much.

And in fact there are quite a few reasons why I am ambivalent about "the Ube" and their loss of the licence.

But I feel the heavy burden and relentless shame of a platinum medal in Olympic-level Teffing may be too much for my delicate plump white shoulders to bear.

So I have saved the three-flush-turd of a post that I have written (so far) until later.

I might chop it up with the brush first before trying to flush again...

Or I might just go to work. Laughing
