Cat advice

We have a 3 legged cat, he's a Russian Blue male and about 9 years old called Rocky. We have had him about 3 years, and have been in our house about 20 months.

My missus' mate told her about another 3 legged cat in the cattery she uses that needed rehoming.

She found at out more it turns out that she (Ruby) is 2 years old and was a feral cat she lost her leg fighting off a dog that was attacking her and her kittens.

Naturally we brought her home.

She is lovely, really affectionate and curious she seems like a very happy cat.

Now introducing them is proving difficult. Initially we shut Ruby in a bedroom. I laid in the room with her for the first hour or 2 but all she did was hide under the wardrobe. However a few hours later she was out and all over us very friendly. Rocky didn't want to know, he wasn't aggressive but but just stayed out of the way. After a few days we moved Ruby to another room and opened up where she had been for Rocky.

Rocky is very much my missus' Cat, he is pretty fickle. When I stroke him after stroking her he is fine but when my Missus does it he will growl and hiss (never heard him make that noise before)

We have tried feeding them 'together' each on the other side of a door Ruby is fine with it Rocky doesn't want to know.

She is tiny and he's is fairly large, it's obvious that he will still be king of the castle but he seems scared of her smell. We have let them see each other she is inquisitive but he doesn't want to know.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to proceed.

The instructions we found, say to keep trying to get them close to each other and have them spend time in each others smells. How long should this take? It's been a week and Rocky doesn't seem any happier.

In the past when we have introduced a new member (cat) to the family, it has taken weeks not days.

Oh dear. Well just to add my experience... we got a kitten to accompany our established cat, who took instant dislike to the interloper, beating her up at every opportunity despite all our efforts to make it work. This lasted until the newbie was about 8 months old, larger than the incumbent, which was when she was well able to retaliate.

Actually it wasn't so much the continuual scrapping that was so bad, but the fact that the two of them were always competitively marking their territory - aka pissing all over the house. I can tell you, there are fewer worse ways to start your day than putting on your shoes before leaving for work, and getting that cold wet feeling on the soles of your feet.

It only lasted... 8 years, which was when the younger one played chicken with a 4x4 and lost. Wasn't me, honest.

What I'm saying here is that don't assume the situation will ever get right. Cats are very territorial and will not necessarily ever get on. Believe me, we tried absolutely everything to resolve it, and nothing worked. Good luck...

[The older finally expired about a year ago (never lost the pissing habit though). Believe me, I am NEVER having a cat again.]

How are they about "treats"? Mine go mental for them, so I have managed to side-track them during occasional combat by doling out equivalent amounts of Dreamies ("one for you, one for her") in front of each other, until they get over themselves.

I'd definitely give it longer than a week. Maybe a month.
Then, if they are both still alive they will probably be fine, they're probably just moodier than your average four-legged moggy, due to "tripodisation" (copyright hellkat word of the day industries plc).

If within the next couple of months, they end up with serious war wounds, then I guess you need to revisit. Hope not!

But don't underestimate the little one. My Dennis is the tripod of the household, and she's a complete bastard. The only reason I occasionally have to stop her from [play]fighting with Longshanks* is that he is clearly a young male and is still putting on weight/muscle, but Dennis is one of those little wiry cats that has developed sharp-as-fuck claws for herself as a defence mechanism against having a missing arm.

*Fuckin Longshanks is the neighbour's cat anyway, bastard lives here most of the time! So much so that I even buy flea pipettes for him.
