PostPosted: 08:16 - 23 Sep 2017    Post subject: Brockhouse Corgi MK1 Reply with quote

I have just joined this forum so hello everyone and thanks for letting me join.

I have just acquired a Brockhouse Corgi Mk1 approx 1949 which I intend to restore.
I know nothing about this bike except for the company's history and where the idea came from for the bike.

Before I start I want to get the engine running but someone has taken out the original magneto and replaced it with a modern one.
With three wires coming out, leading to a cdi and then onto a coil.
I have tried all ways to wire this but no joy

Also how would I now set up the engine timing.

If anyone could help me out with this I would be grateful and you have my thanks in advance

Presumably you've already joined a specialist forum?
It's a US one but an enthusiast is an enthusiast.

Tried three times but had no reply, I was just wondering if it was because of all the typhoon and bad weather

There are only a few people with any experience of older machines like this, go and do some homework first and find the information and spares you need.
I'll give you a lead,

There seems to be a lot of interest in these this year, they command silly money for what they are and a lot of people find the difficult to ride, like many of the machines made post war, they just don't suit todays road conditions.

Thanks for the lead, I have already done a lot of digging but tech info is a bit thin on the ground

Just check mopedland it could be useful and reasonably close

Thanks

Pretty sure I've seen something very similar* at the Shuttleworth Collection. Might be worth paying a visit and seeing if you can speak to someone about it there.

(*Not sure if it was a Brockhurst.)

It is definitely Brockhouse Corgi which was the UK version made by Brockhouse engineering in Stockport.
All the bikes made in the first year of production were exported to the USA and re-brand as the Indian Papoose as Brockhouse purchased the Indian Motor cycle company.

The Corgi/Papoose were a spin off from the Welbike which was made for the British Army Airborne forces in WW2

These are not military issue they are civilian cos they have a front brake and pressed steel wheels, original MK1 has spoked wheels and no brake, therefore for battlefield use only

You are correct however the spoked wheels were changed for the disc wheels on the Mk1 because they were not strong enough and kept collapsing

The Welbike was the military predecessor

Corgi/Papoose were civilian versions

I could be totally wrong on this, but I believe the Corgi had a Villiers 98cc engine. If this is true, there is loads of info on Villiers, and spares are currently available .

Thanks for the lead, I have already seen the completed bike for sale.

The Corgi's predecessor the Welbike had a Villiers 98cc engine but the Corgi had an Excelsior Spryt 98cc engine.

Wish it did have the Villiers enine because it would make things alot easier.

Does your mag have a manufacturers name on it? If it's modern, they are probably still going and could advise on how to wire it up.

Probably a single lead to the ignition coul and the other two as a charging phase.

It would be wrong to assume the previous owner wired it up correctly. Perhaps this is why it was sold? Often a modern magdyno will be a 12v negative earth, many old bikes are 6v positive earth and need rewiring to suit.

Also battery. Many of the newer magdynos need a capacitor in the circuit to run without a battery.

I have decide that I am going to return everything to it's original state as it came out of the factory.

I have ripped everything out and have managed to get hold of an original fly wheel.

However the deeper I go the more horrors I am finding

Someone apart from welding the fly wheel on has also welded the gear sprocket, I have managed to get them off using a dremmel tool.

Just found out that this idiot has trashed the stator plate so now I need one of those, things are not going well.
