Hey all,

My 4 year old has it in her head she wants a pet from Santa clause. I told her Santa does not deliver pets but it seems the wife has indicated he might be able to stretch to fish Rolling Eyes

I don't mind too much as a one point I actually wanted to get some fish but I also understand the attention span of a 4 year old means that by Jan the 14th they will be looking to me to keep them alive...

I need some tips on where to start, obviously I am not looking at a big tropical aquarium but I would like something a bit more than a gold fish. Am I best just going to petsathome or should I go to one of the places that seem to be attached to garden centres.

Any advice gratefully accepted

Children want something to pet and play with. Fish will get boring in 3, 2, 1... Fish in a tank is an old man's hobby. Thumbs Up

Get a small tank and cheap fish. If your child gets interested go bigger, if not, you won't be wasting too much money.

Maybe some BCF fish people have some old tanks, pumps and other stuff, that you could buy from them.

I have nothing better to do, so I checked the pricing of different fish and there are quite a lot of colourful fish that are even cheaper than a ''standard'' Goldfish. So the most expensive part here is the tank and filtration, I suppose.

*Side note: A goldfish would be very easy to replace if something happens to it. Shhh!

Get a goldfish because bomb-proof.

If you're onto small furries, I can highly recommend hooded rats as pets for kiddies. They like human company, are highly interactive, don't live a very long time (say 2.5 to 3 years on average) and are almost impossible to drop.

Don't buy fish from petsathome for a start, don't buy a gold fish if you want a small tank and read up on keeping fish if you plan to teach your little one.

So do babies. Babies aren't furry.

I put it on a separate post in case you were not interested.
Based in SW16 (streatham) and have 3 fish needing a new home.
they are very attractive goldfish and of a decent size.

got a spare tank which you can also have but it has no lid or filter.

come and collect when ever you like.

Cheers ColinK98, let me check with the wife. It might be a bit too early as we were thinking of getting it for Christmas but we could store the tank in the loft till then, the fish might be a bit more difficult Very Happy
