Just buy a horse.
She'll probably decide she wants one at some point, and if you're going to cave to a four year old now......

Ha she already said she wanted one and the father in law has a friend that lets her ride one when she goes to see them.

I hope that placates her.

Seriously Nate, don't give her any living thing. Four year olds are notorious for whims and fancies and you'll end up lumbered with a living creature which you are responsible for.It might be only a fish but you'll end up having to find care for it when you want to go away and committed to a regime of care however minimal.

When my girls were small I was constantly bombarded with seasonal requests for cute and not so cute creatures, when the last thing I wanted was any sort of pet.

My suggestion would be to start her off with Sylvanian Families, a couple of figures and maybe a house. She'll love it and at future birthdays and Christmases you can add to it with more figures, furniture cars etc.

She'll be able to give them names and imagine all sorts of stories and scenarios. Good for her developmentally, and you don't have to feed/clean them. Thumbs Up

I had chuck norris of the fish* world as a kid, it used to knock the top of the tank (crap cheap tank) and jump out, cue me crying and someone having to scoop it up. It also once jumped out the bath whilst its tank was being cleaned out. Gave it away due to the suicide attempts and it died soon after (never found out how...). Also had a goldfish which was a docile thing and lived a surprisingly long time. Boring pets though.

*dunno what it was, it was white and had a Frenchman's 'tache.

Very popular with fisherpersons too, they put up a good fight and look pretty in the post landing pics.

There's a west country fishery that has a lake heavily stocked with koi and other goldfish based hybrids - all things being equal, I'm planning my Xmas holiday there and will definitely be dangling my rod in this pond for a bit.

I'd agree with Tracey. You'll end up walking/feeding/cleaning out the little beast after 6 months, plus you'll have already forked out for cages/equipment. I had rabbit when I was 6 or 7, soon got bored of feeding it and it was left to my older sister to look after.

I also had mice at age 14. Fairly easy to keep and nice to handle, but they started biting me so I released them into the wild to get eaten.

Fish will not excite a 4 year old. Goldfish might be the best option, though I would use this as a lesson to your daughter that you don't always get want you want at Christmas!

For me, pets are simple.

If you want a pet but don't have the time/patience to walk the thing and spend a reasonable amount of time out of the house get a Cat. Cats can show love, and take care of themselves for the main part.

If you have the time & inclination to look after a dog properly then get a dog. - Dogs are the most superior of all the pets, they are your mate and they love you regardless of anything and are great to spend time with.

If you want something pretty to look at and are a hobbyist then look at some sort of fish set up.

Otherwise, get no pets.

I have a Cat, mainly because I cant have a dog. He is a lovely Cat but all Cats are arseholes.

I guess also with dogs you can dump them on someone when you go on holiday. With fish you have to be one of those weird people who expects someone to go round and water their plants Smile

Nobody else had one of these lol?

Your milage may vary, but should entertain a 4 year old, and not live that long. They are just small shrimp, few days to hatch and all that.

My kids had those when they were small but to be honest I think they are a bad idea. I'm no bunny-hugger, believe me, but I think the fact sea monkeys are marketed literally as toys for kids (you'd even buy them from toyshops, not petshops) sends out a crap message to them. The shrimps will probably survive until their special sea-monkey food runs out and then peg it, so then you throw all the kit away and get the kid a Barbie doll instead.

+1 for a fish when it dies you can always eat it,
don't get a cat greedy hateful scavengers constantly searching for food and they'll scratch the fuck out of your carpets and ruin your furniture.
I'd love to put ours in the canal inside a bin liner with a few bricks for company Evil or Very Mad
