Hello! Can any one help?

After storing my Suzuki Bandit 650 '07 outside for nearly two years there are a number of problems which I am looking to sort out. Unfortunately due to circumstance the bike sat outside in damp conditions but largely protected from the environment for just under a couple of years. Was started regularly and runs well however;

- The front two forks have some rust on the chrome - photos.
- The seals on the front forks seem to have rusted but there is no oil leaking. Both forks are affected - photos.
- There is some surface rust on the frame. An issue? Photos.

I suppose my first question is how serious are the issues?

Secondly how likely is it that it will pass the MOT with these issues?

Thirdly any advice at all on known issues from storage outside and issues relating to Bandits would be great.

I am moving house soon and would like to get it on the road. It maybe that the bike will now live on the highway rather than a private drive and so it now needs to be road legal. I also want to use it! Getting it through the MOT and addressing issues after would buy me some needed time.

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks to you all for reading!

I wouldn't be unduly worried about any of that. The rust on the chrome - try polishing it out with aluminium foil scrunched up and dipped in vinegar. It looks like it is high enough that it is above the active region anyway (i.e. under full compression the seals won't go that high).

The dust seals could do with replacing, but I've had a bike go through like that - as long as there is no oil leakage it is fine. It's minimal expense to replace them, just a bit of effort to pull the leg off.

The frame looks like surface only.

What he said, except tin foil is the pikey method. (Although I cannot knock its efficacy, I've not tried it) Very Happy

On mine I used VERY fine wet and dry to get rid of the worst rust on the stanchions.
Then worked my way down to even finer paper, then finished with 0000 grade wire wool and autosol.

Mine lived outside so I used to just regularely dab on ACF50 and jobs a goodun.

To help with a rusty spring on the oil seal I left ACF50 on it for a while then cleaned it out.

In regards to the MOT, he isn't going to lift your dust deals, so replace them and he wouldn't even know what is underneath.
If they started leaking, even the laziest MOT man is going to at least bounce your forks, so that won't likely go unnoticed.

PIKEY AFTERTHOUGHT:
Running with the idea that in reality Mr MOT man shouldn't take anything off the bike...
If you cba to replace your dust seals for now, you could in theory mock up some Fork Gaitors to wrap around them (covering stanchion, seals, and part of the leg)
Depends on the MOT man I guess, some might take it as a slight to their intelligence. Laughing

I ride a Bandit 600... badly.
