Living at the edge of the Peak District as I do, I sometimes end up riding North to play in Scotland or the National Parks in the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales or North Yorkshire Moors. However I've never really found a reasonable route to cross the 'gap' north of the Peak District; between Manchester or Sheffield and Leeds/Bradford it's all pretty much urbanised and slow going; so it's a choice between that and just clogging it up the motorway. I'm probably heading up there next week and as I've got plenty of time I just wondered if there's anyone here who has a clever route they'd like to divulge?

I've used this route before https://goo.gl/maps/Xh8v7M45hZEbh7Z5A as a compromise between riding vaguely interesting roads and having it take all day. There are some nice bits, but it isn't great...

I live in your destination area but used to sometimes have a weekend or rally in the peak district and come back more or less via your route taking in Holmfirth and Keighley/Skipton to get back to home turf.
For north York Moors or Yorks coast you could also strike out more to the east maybe by Gainsborough, and go over Humber Bridge and Wolds.
The Wolds are a rather overlooked area with excellent sweeping riding roads and villages tucked away hard to find

There is no good route .. I've used the A629 .. but frankly it's an urban desert to be crossed quickly.. principally why I don't stray south of A59 without good cause..

Thanks. Ah well - good to know I'm not missing anything obvious. Yeah have ridden around the Wolds before - definitely an overlooked part of the country... bit too far a detour for most of my northerly trips though

OP, live just down the road and yes it's a ballache (not limited to just that area either, you can draw a line from Sheffield to Liverpool and it's pretty much that entire corridor); I more or less do what you do with that route you posted. Or, sometimes I will motorway hop the M60/M66 and jump off when I get to the M65 to get back onto nicer roads. Yes, it's motorway but not that far and gets through the area quickly. Sometimes it's better to spend half an hour on the motorway than 1hr+ on at best adequate roads (although Glossop through to the Woodhead and then over Holme Moss is quite nice).

I have a similar issue in reverse on my rare trips to the Peak District as I live in Haworth, just south of the Dales and above the M62.

I skirt round Halifax and Huddersfield on backroads, but it’s slow going in places.
