So we have a border collie that lives between our house an my parents.

Parents neighbours feed stray cats, subsequently our dog now has fleas. Dog has been treated with "front on" or what ever its called (stuff that goes between shoulder blades)

But we have never treated our house because we have small kids an dont know if the flea powder stuff is nasty to kids etc.

Anyone ever dealt with fleas in their house?

Hoover a lot.
Smoke bombs are available - but you would want kids and yourselves out of the house to do it.

We bought an aerosol from the vets as we noticed our dog had brought fleas in (we suspect) from the garden hedgehog. Hoovered lots, including under all the furniture, and sprayed all around the edges and on the sofa. Gone within a couple of weeks.

We used diatomaceous earth, worked it into the carpets, left for a day or two, vacummed and repeated til the blighters were gone.

Can cat fleas live on dogs? Won't they just die anyway?

But yes, flea spray, hoovering and washing fabrics Thumbs Up

Being fair if your Dog`s flea treatment was up to date, the chemical found in Spot On etc would be in it`s system, killing eacj flea that tried it on, the property wouldnt matter,
But if the Dog has carried them home, smoke bombs and a spray called VIP is very good, with the obvious treatment for the poor animal being bitten.

PS Frontline is causing issues with some animals, they denied it for ages, but its pretty well known now, Advantage (Manor Pharmacy) or Comfortis (vets only I believe) are up to the job.

This is the only real way to properly get rid of the entire cycle of fleas / larvae / eggs.

Heres what we do if our dogs ever get fleas

Treat dogs with stronghold spot on monthly
Spray house round skirting board/rugs/carpets/soft furnishings with https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0040XXX3E/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1507727115&sr=8-1&keywords=staykill+household+flea+spray&dpPl=1&dpID=416aAdpZO1L&ref=plSrch

Wash dogs bedding on +60 deg wash

Hoover carpets soft furnishings

Repeat as necessary

Its not.

You need to keep them away from any treated areas I believe.

Thumbs Up

Diatomaceous earth can be eaten, people love it as the next best thing for their inner qi and auras n chakras (might have made that up) but it can be eaten. But it's best to not have anyone walking over what's being treated. When we put it down, we could see the fleas being all like "do one, it's Armageddon!!!", you don't want them jumping on to you and you just taking them around the house anyway.

I usually recommend a flea spray containing methoprene for the household. This is an insect growth regulator that stops larvae turning into adult fleas and has a persistant effect. Doesn't kill adult fleas but that's not what it's for, it's to break the life cycle. The one duhawkz would be entirely appropriate.

Alongside using an effective adulticide on all dogs and cats in the household and vacuuming, washing bedding in a hot wash among other things. Evern bumping the heating and humidity up a bit when you've just put your flea treatment on to encourage pupae to hatch (and jump on the dog, and die).

We're using oral adulticides a lot more now in dogs. Nexguard/bravecto etc. Fire and forget, difficult to get wrong.

Be aware some over the counter flea treatments don't have anything in them that kills fleas. If it was cheap, there's probably a reason.

I used Acclaim spray. It decimated the fleas from my house. Less than 3 days and regular spraying. Beastly.

He's been spotless since, house was clear for the last 3 years I was there. Beautiful.

Seconded.

The two strays I'd been looking after repaid me with fleas recently. I tried a couple of different shop bought products but, they only helped slightly.

Bought a few cans of Indorex online and job jobbed. Make sure to spray it everywhere, including all nooks and crannies. Remove children from the house when spraying it though. Thumbs Up

As said, hoover everywhere daily and empty the hoover each time.Wash everything you can on a 90 degree wash.

Another vote for Indorex

Avoid anything from Bob Martin or Johnsons - totally useless.

I was told the same about Bob Martin by the vet. No active ingredient to stop the eggs hatching apparently.
