Had bike with private plate insured.

Put private plate on retention and sold bike with original registration.

Policy has probably 6 months to go, I may well get another bike in this time. When it expires i will have 4 years ncb.

Policy was only about £150 tpft, cancelling wouldn't see much, if anything back.

I'm assuming that because the insurance is not covering the registration that is on the bike (it is covering the private plate on retention) I will have no come back should the bike be in an accident.

Correct or Not?

Not. It is covering the vehicle, not the registration - the registration is just an assigned marker. Conversely, if you were to have an accident on the bike the day after you put the private plate on, you'd still expect indemnity despite the fact that the registration number isn't the same any more.

But I expect any comeback from it to be minimal - I don't think DVLA's systems are capable of putting 2+2 as 4 and your plate will remain the only reference on the MID which is searchable.
