HI All

I have an XJ550 engine lying about that I was going to refresh with XJ600 pistons and head - to do this requires the bores widening from 57 - 58.5 mm which i think the liners can handle OK. I have the pistons but the rebore quotes form the local works are 50 quid (inc VAT) per pot.

This seems dear to me - am I out of touch? If I am the project probably isn't worth it.

My work paid 600 quid for a 3" machined cube with one 1/2" hole in it 2 days ago. We have our own huge machine shop, but it would cost us more in not running normal work than to farm it out to next-door.

£50 a pot is cheap, setup time per-pot isn't something you write off or ignore, and you'll need at least 2 passes down the bore, machine and confidence dependant. Add to that verification of the job being done properly afterwards. It all adds up in time, and machinists rates are high.

Break it down:

Time to set up in a machine.
Time to machine.
Time to Clean up.
The engineers is a business for profit not a charity. Smile
£50/pot seems OK to me.

Is that £50 for a good rebore or £50 for a shit one? You need to be asking questions about clearances and suchlike.

Have you asked Tef to do a rebore for you in 1978 where he lives? It's sure to be cheaper, but you'll need to specify it in thous.

The Tef most likely only accepts payment in kind or Guineas (probably Guinness too).

They used to be £10 a bore back in the very late 80s, very early 90s, but bearing in mind that there's probably only one place in the country that can still do them now, £50 seems reasonable.

Fair enough.. I can take that on board.

Like most things these days the economics of repair become marginal..

Cheers

Way of the world nowadays.

When I first went to sea we used to machine spare parts.

Then it was just replacement spare parts, remove broken and fit spare.

Now, half the time it's just cheaper to replace the machine.

Funnily enough I'll be signing off tool shops as an innovation...

It's also part psychological,. I recently picked up a 'spares' FZ750 with two motors rolling gear and other spares for less than 150 and so while it is greatly satisfying to rebuild a motor the cold hard facts don't often stack up (200 quid for a set of XJ pistons rings for example).

In the aircooled VW world things are different - a rustbucket MOT failure T2 van will cost 1000s still and yet you can get a complete set of new barrels, pistons rings etc.. for about 200 I guess due to the abundant world demand still. Confused

Are they too new? (1992-2003)

Indeed they are - pre 91 could work but if they too are worn it's a non-starter. The XJ currently has a Radian YX600 engine but I had notion to re-fit the original 550 engine so it would have matching numbers and in the process also giving it a top-end rebuild and a few more ccs - looks like it's not going to be worth the bother.
