Hi Friends

My name is Simon and i'm on my way back to a bike after 10+ years, I was a despatch rider back in the day but only on small bikes, around 13 years ago I passed my test and rode for 2 years before parking up and selling everything, biking has been niggling away in my head for a few years so after a chat with the girls we have decided to let me have another bike.

Bike History
1987
Yamaha FS1E deluxe
Suzuki TS50
1988
Suzuki GP100 (accident whilst DR broken femur)
Honda CB125 superdream
1989
Yamaha RD125LC

Forward to 2005ish
Suzuki bandit 600cc
Honda VTR1000 Firestorm (swapped for a mk2 RS2000 doh!)
Kawasaki GTR1000

The plan is to sell my car and buy a Honda ST1300 and a smaller car, i will be doing some kind of advanced rider course ROSPA or similar to refresh my skills and get me started.

Welcome back to the light Thumbs Up

Why a Pan? Don't get me wrong, they are great bikes but are more towards the tourer end rather than a sports tourer.

If that's what you want, something big, comfortable and a mile eater they are great. I have a Trophy and that is a similar bike but it isn't the most agile and fun thing although it handles fine for a 300kg bike.

If I wanted something a bit sportier but still big I'd go for the Kwack GTR (still shaft drive) or a VFR (if you can get your eyes past the styling). If you go for full blooded touring the 1800 Goldwing is a far better bike than a Pan.

Anyway, whatever you choose, have fun with it.

Thanks it's good to be back...almost.

The Pan for me offers everything i require i.e commuting, days out and touring, i'm not a fan of Triumph (never owned one just don't fancy one yet) although i do like the styling of the st1050, i prefer to be sat up to being leant over the tank and i also fancied the shaft drive from a maintenance point of view, just the best allrounder for me at this moment in time.

As for the Goldwing it does nothing for me at all.

I've got a Pan, and love it. The three very similar bikes worth looking at are the FJR1300, the GTR1400 and the Pan 1300. I went out looking for the first of any of those that came up with a price/condition I was happy with.

The FJR and GTR are more towards the sporty end, Pan to the touring. There's not a massive amount in it though - all three are big, heavy shaft drive beasts with varying degrees of upright position that will handle the commute in poor conditions, carry your luggage with ease, or head off to the continent for two-up touring. Once you get used to them they are surprisingly nimble and stable, and all three will pick up their skirts and charge off into the distance in a way that belies their weight.

I wouldn't rule out the other two, having three models to go for gives you a better chance of finding a good one.

Yeah thanks for that mate i have researched all 3 bikes but the Pan just seems to come out on top although if the right FJR is about when i'm ready it will be a tough call.

Fair enough. It's where I put my money, and 35,000 miles in 18 months later I don't regret it at all.

I appreciate all the comments and advice but i'm really set on a Pan, you are covering way more mileage than i will but your input will be invaluable when I get one mate, thank you.

Hence the Doh!!!! I stole it from a colleague for a few hundred quid, spent a couple of grand having it restored then fell back in love with bikes and let it go.....,, live and learn, not worth the money they are fetching though mate, it’s mainly down to middle aged men with too much money.

So yes dead set on buying a Pan......................Until i bought a BMW K1200GT SE, had a ride and felt i could easily get used to the indicator switches, lots of toys too which is a bonus.

Sale fell through due to faulty ABS system....ffs back to the classifieds
