I know a guy with one. He's not small : probably 6-4 and 18 stone. Gets on fine.

It's a savage bit of kit. He's done a lot of miles on it from new, including a couple of IOM trips, and not had any dramas or issues.

I've sat on one. I'm 6' 2'', and it felt perfect for me. Pity.

What about the 1200gs? Gets a fair bit of stick but it is a pretty capable machine, especially if you can learn to off-road with it. which will get serious brownie points. Can buy a pre-owned one at a reasonable price and most owners have too much money so any little job gets done and
they also drive them like old men which they mainly are so they wont be thrashed. Mr. Green

I did like my 750i, but it does a specific job.

A 1290 is fucking boss.... as long as its not the 'im adventure and had my balls removed' edition.

Besides I got a ton of compliments from guys aged 60+ about my r1150gs (I shit you not, it was getting weird) So if you like older men this bike is literally a saggy balls magnet.

If you're going to make an ugly bike, give it loadsa grunt and paint it bright. I think the KTM marketing boys did a good job, with all the drift and wheelie videos too, when it was first released. But I've spoken to owners who rate it as a quite capable tourer as well, seen them loaded up for it. Reliability would be my only concern - although I don't know if they have issues in that regard. Wouldn't have thought they'd be any worse than your 990. Definitely one I'd like to try.

Different world down there to up here, i can leave my bike keys in the bike and no one will touch it. Know many people that leave their bike keys in the bike in the garage.

I've got the 2017 SDR - it's a really, really good bike. I'm 6 foot and it feels spot on for me, it would probably be worth sitting on one to judge what it would be like for you though. Apparently adding the Powerparts seat increases the height a little, so that might be worth considering if the regular seat is just a little too low.

Although it can be pretty ridiculous if you want it to be, it actually handles really well at low speeds too and the throttle response at low revs is very smooth - much better than the 1190 Adventure I had previously. It's packed with electronics, which is either a good or a bad thing depending on your view of them, but I find them fairly unobtrusive and the TFT screen lets you easily switch between modes on the go.

For a naked bike, wind noise is pretty well managed, and I actually find it less noisy then the 1190 as the screen on this tended to push the air up to my lid, whereas on the 1290 it seems to hit my chest which is much easier to manage by just leaning into it a little at speed.

Most of my riding is twisty B roads, but I toured around Europe on it this summer which it handled very well. The cruise control was really nice to have for this just to give my wrist a bit of a break but other than that trip I haven't really used it that often as I forget it's there, having never had it before. On the same trip I saw an indicated top speed of 274 KMH on the Autobahn (with the luggage in the photo below) and it seemed very planted and stable with no hint of speed wobble. However, it did feel like somebody was trying to rip my head off backwards at that speed, even when I was as flat as I could get on the tank!

My only real gripe is the pricing model KTM use for it which requires you to pay for additional "packs" (on an already very expensive bike) to unlock software features such as the quickshifter or to remove the wheelie control.

Nothing wrong with the GS, especially if you like older men from the sounds of it, but it’s clearly a very different bike from the SuperDuke. I get the impression you would have the same answer even if this was a “Superleggera 1299 anyone got one” discussion Laughing

Two of my mates have them, one located here (2015 model) and one in San Francisco (2016 model), neither have had any issues so far and rate them very highly. They’re short arses though, but saying that I’m just over 6 foot and if it weren’t for the fact that I can’t find insurance for the thing for under £2500 pa coupled with the fact that it would probably disappear the day of purchase (Londistan) I’d have one too 🤬

The guy here rides his into London almost daily and hasn’t had an incident yet, but it’s “securely” garaged both ends so more likely only have to fight them off between points if something were to happen. Also it’s the older black model, so doesn’t stand out as much as the orange beast.

I would love to know how they compare against the 990, 60 extra bhp sounds nice but I find my 990 just the right amount of power (as in you can use all of it on the road), but I've never owned anything with more so Laughing I see a lot of 1290's around Hartside, there was a SE model last week which are lovely:

https://cdn.bcf.44bytes.net/files/2016-ktm-1290-super-duke-r-special-edition.jpg

Think I prefer the stealthier look of the 2017 bikes though, plus the TFT screen looks nifty.

My 990 is my first vtwin and I really like the engine, and of course the filthy noise it makes Shifty Shifty Shifty Maybe a 1290 will be on the cards some day, but had the 990 just over a year and still love it.
