PostPosted: 15:05 - 31 Oct 2017    Post subject: Which bike for mainly B Roads? Reply with quote

After owning sportsbikes for years, and taking stock of the roads I ride, it's time to move away from sportsbikes.

My riding is mainly 70% B roads, 30% Fast A Roads, usually heading through the Peak District or the Dales for 3-6 hours. I only manage to get out at weekends or summer evenings, so this is to be a toy not a commuter.

My budget is £5-8k.

I'm currently toying something like a street triple, hyperstrada or 990r.

Any suggestions?

Are you wedded to the idea of fast bike, grarrrrg, win the race?

Have you considered a TDM something with less speed but more character?

Just as an example, the Bonny Bobber has been selling like don't-rape-me-bro bracelets at a Swedish music festival.

Is something like that completely out of the picture? How slow would you go?

Husqvarna 701 or ktm 690. (Enduro is very tall.)

MT09/10 was the first thing to come to mind.

That was my first thought when I saw B Roads, no point having extra power you can't use and having to handle extra weight.

A light 27hp motorcycle can be fully exploited on small B roads.

My much heavier 83hp bike has to be bullied ...it's still fun but the local B roads are very twisty so the duke never really gets into its stride.

I'd imagine the KTM 390 could be immense fun.

See, now I'm convinced that it should say that.

Ah yes, those big manly B roads. I think they're called A roads Confused

Light weight, coupled with good suspension, is the key. My Striple got thrown all over the place on bumpy B roads, cos the suspension was set up too harsh. The Fazer 1000 isn't, erm, fazed by it though, but yes, more work.

I’d much prefer responses to manly B road bikes in all honesty.

How about a 70s Z1 only half filled with brake fluid?

Don't think I ever saw anything anodised back in the day. Could put a cheap Kawasaki-style steering damper on it to make it even less keen to go round corners though Thumbs Up

And bung on some period correct Marzocchi gas shocks (settings stiff, fillings falling out and hardtail) for added special handling.

I've been riding a 2016 sv650 around b roads lately and it's more fun than my hornet 900. But, you can't just turn into a byway when you see the sign like you can on an enduro/lighter adventure bike. Add tank range and comfort too, suddenly a new v-strom 650 with a few tweaks would seem a good choice.

Depends how B the B roads are. If they're like e.g. the B1225 from Caistor to Horncastle or B1248 from Wetwang to Norton (I'm not making these place names up btw) then anything from an R6 to a ZX-14. But if you're on about B roads like the B1223 from Cawood to Ulleskelf or the B1363 from Oswaldkirk to Sutton on the Forest then an MT07 or a stripple would be better.

I love my Striple on b-roads and bendy a-roads. Not so much on autobahns where its lack of power shows up.

Try and find another bike thats around 175kg and 100bhp.
It's so nimble and feels like 250-400.

I've been looking at 2nd bikes for a year and nothing flicks my switch except maybe a gsxr750 which has the same weight but 50% more power.
But you don't want a sportsbike.

If its truly b-roads, then Striple. If you are more on a-roads, then I'd try an MT09.

I would be tempted to try a KTM690 too. 150kg and just enough power maybe.

V-Strom 1000?

I have much more fun on twisty roads on it than I ever did on my Fireblade. 100bhp, decent suspension, brakes and all day comfort.

Pigeon gives figures that confirm a ktm/husky (or big single economical fun machine) will do ok. His lack of power on autobahns isn't; a; relevant in the uk, and b; when did power stop anyone go in fast? A Nissan Micra will eventually do 110mph...
Get the bike that fits you best and makes you smile when you see it in the morning. Apply this rule to life and you can't go far wrong.

I'll give it a try on the Enfield over the weekend, I can imagine it'll whack a ton if I just keep it pinned for long enough, right? Laughing

KTM hasn't in my experience been economical but mine is a litre twin rather than a single, but I can't see the single being too healthy on juice. I think my 990 averages low 30's.
