I am selling something on Gumtree. Got a text that a bloke in London wants it, he has sent payment but my PayPal is being slow or is it a scammer bloke?

It's UK not Nigeria, am I being over cautious?

I rang PayPal and after 15 minutes of waiting I've given up, might try them later.

Look at the email address it's been sent from. That isn't PayPal.

It makes me sad how gullible people are these days. Neutral

Family and friends wouldn't have a shipping itemisation.

Even ignoring the spammy email, have you not logged into PayPal to check your balance?

Sounds like he has to me, as he asked if they were being slow.

Just hope he's not clicked through the email.

No I clicked through PayPal. Got through to them, they suggest it's a scam. Blocked number/texts on phone. Thanks for the help.

That’s the worrying thing - you shouldn’t need help. It’s obvious. 😞

I am very upset with you right now 😞😞😞😭

Send me your card details and the unused / unimportant 3 digit code on the back of it and I’ll do a full security audit of it for you.

You’re welcome.

It can be hard to tell depending on the email app/provider used. Microsoft don't clearly display the senders address which I don't like, I also remember the iOS app being bad in this respect:

A bit of a dangerous game Mr. Maxwell Roland is playing is it not? He has given out an address which must be his, a relatives or friends, He could find he had scammed some thick but very nasty people who aren't adverse to paying him a visit.

Or, more usefully, send him a bag of faeces.

I thought about sending pizza/taxi or whatever but then thought nah, leave it. It's not like I lost anything. I have reported the fraud to met police, thanks RB for the link.

I'd have to be suspicious of a name like that, though.
Nobody normal is called Maxwell these days.
And even if they are, most millennials would usually have shortened it to Max.

Plus, if its one of those mad Johnny Foreigners, they often put their names back to front and who the hell in this day and age is called Roland*.

Nigerians, usually have old-fashioned Christian names,
I wouldn't trust a name like that AT ALL.

edit: why have I put all those commas in that last paragraph? Truly, someone must have come along behind me and sprinkled them there after I was gone. I'm supposed to be a fuckin' editor. I don't know my apostrophes from my ellipses (or is that arse from elbow? Thinking probably both ... )

Typing 'Maxwell Roland' into Facebook brings pages of results; pages.

I'm sure a lot of less technically savvy people are duped.

Friends at the post office maybe?

Write-ups of photoshoots in grotmags don't really count as 'editing'...

They do, it's just street view being a bit potato with the numbers (as it normally is).

They're only expensive if you intend making a mortgage or rent payment.
