So, after my bike-jacking resulting in the theft of my last SH300, followed closely by two acid-attacks during scooter thefts, I'm looking to switch to an unappealing frugal geared bike for commuting and general pottering about.

That means:

* light weight, ideally well under 200kg, preferably low CoG

* cheap, well under 1500; this seems to rule out Ninja 250

* not a theft magnet; so, not a huge amount of fun, but capable of 70+mph

* decent options for mounting top-box

* Euro 3, ruling out most bikes older than 2008 or so; I'm commuting into London

I'm currently considering YBR 250; this might be a little bit exotic for finding spares, but it ticks most of my other boxes. Any other suggestions?

Well, there's a few YBR250's around, within your budget, a Suzuki Inazuma, might do the job, Honda CBR250 or, you could look at some of the chinese 250's

Having said that, here's Ninja, within your budget ..

If you don't mind a day trip to Blackpool

The acid attacks weren't on me of course, they were a couple of weeks ago:

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/london-acid-attacks-victim-man-critically-ill-blinded-incidents-half-hour-tottenham-walthamstow-met-a8035311.html

Both attacks within a mile of Monument Way where I got attacked.

I don't want to get attacked again, and I especially don't want a dose of acid in the face, so I'm no longer interested in riding a scooter anywhere near Tottenham, nor anything entertaining to ride; not until scooter thefts combined with acid attacks are a distant memory.

Reckon you could easily do a U-turn within a single lane with no risk of dropping it?

Not absolutely critical, but it's something I really appreciated on the scooter - being able to quickly U-turn even while moving with the flow of traffic, especially when finding parking.

I can afford more than 1500, but I much rather something I can treat almost as disposable wrt to theft.

Black ones go for less because waciss. Mine's a 2010 bought with 4000 miles on it in 2015 for £1350, or half what the chap was originally asking. He had no takers for a month and didn't even try to haggle it up from that offer.

It is easy being green, if you're a Ninja.

Very good price I reckon (though you bought in Scotland, right?), and might be worth stalking on eBay for the second bike (my partner also giving up on her scooter).

Stability, definitely, turning circle... maybe. I just got an NC700x,turning circle seems worse than my old CBF1000 in my '3 point turn into the shed' test. Not really an issue for me, as i rarely have the need to turn in the road, and i may get better as i get used to it's characteristics more (only had it 2 weeks) It's a great commuter so far. Don't really fit in your budget though.

Very easily. COG is so low it makes it easy to throw about with little effort at all. You could also look at the S version if the X isn't to your liking.

The buses are just as dangerous Wink

250s are overpriced, but something like a CBF250 will have very little appeal to baklaf.

If I commuted in an area where there was a high likelihood of bike jacking, I'd consider fitting some kind of tether kill switch wrist strap doobrie. Get pushed off, the bike ain't going anywhere.

Saying that, I'd probably move out of the shithole area. Or use the car with the doors locked.

Trains double my commute time on average (35 minutes up to 70 minutes; at best, 55 minutes if the timing is perfect), I'd have to spend time packed in carriages with diseased people, and the trudging crush when changing lines is soul destroying. And to cap it all off, over 10 GBP per day for the pleasure.

I've had too many bike thefts (3 this year) to seriously consider something moderately expensive, and I can't consider something old because of ULEZ. Leaves me in a real corner of the market.

The area I'm in isn't bad; trouble is, the main roads go through the bad bits, and they're hard to avoid (on purpose - TfL doesn't want rat-runs). Car is out of the question, congestion charge + parking is silly money.

Dunno, I'd be looking at a Yammy XJ6, FZ6n, Kwak ER6, later Suzie SV650, Gladius, Honda CBF600. That sort of thing really.

Under 200kg? yep
Cheap? several about at £1.5-2k
Manage 70mph? no prob
Euro3? yep, all post 2007, or versions of post 2007.
Luggage? yeah, plenty of Givi options and at home with big box on back.
Non-theft magnet? You'll never tick this one in London but at least you can stick a huge chain in your topbox and park it next to something posher with inferior security.

TBH I'd expect a half decent commuter 250 will cost similar moneys. Maybe spot cheaper on insurance and fuel, but not by much. But crucially will struggle on 70mph roads and less fun. A bigger bike will probably have some handy stuff like ABS too.
