The BRC500XC Engine conversion kit for 2007-2016 KTM250/300’s took another significant leap forward! Very exciting week as we received our printed cases by Rapid3D. I am very pleased to report that all internals fit as designed. Transmission shifts and best of all, the Engine fits into the chassis easily! Carb sockets into the airbox boot the same as the 250/300, no modification required. This will truly be a “drop in” 500cc Engine for your 250/300 bikes. The cast tooling for the cases has now been ordered. We will be finishing up the crankshaft, balance shaft, and primary gear design now. Estimated cost is $7500 Canadian dollars. Kit will include cases, cylinder, head, crankshaft, piston, primary and balance shaft gears, and an exhaust.

Laughing roughly £4,500 (before import costs and taxes)

I could buy a new Fantic for that.

About £4500 of your actual honest to goodness sterlings.

Can't imagine it'd be 4.5 grand better somehow. You could buy a proper CR/KX 500 and be done for that kind of dough.

Even the 'AF' conversion models I think it was, that were in modern frames are pretty old now - though not sure if they're still doing them.

So likely you'd have to spend a good bit to get it near a modern bike's suspension, chassis etc.

So, if you want a modern light weight big cc 2 stroke, I think the only option would be the rather elusive and rare Maico which has 'questionable' reality at best.

Also; bolting on the kit to a KTM gives you some of the best availability for both parts and knowledge of how the rest of the bike works.

Of course; in reality a modern 300 is very easy to ride with more power than most will make decent use of - I can't see the 500 improving on the riding experience for most; apart from the occasional 'blip the throttle and cackle manically as it takes off in a completely inappropriate gear.

Could make sense for sand racing etc where the 2 strokes lose out a bit to the 4 strokes.

Oh and; no, I wouldn't be spending that myself, before a long line of other toys, even if I was regularly riding off-road.
