Finding and buying a bike is SOOOOO hard! (whine)

Ok in all seriousness though, I've just walked away from buying a 17 year old gsx600f, gumtree sale for 650 quid...

Looks good but chains seized so no test riding...

And from photos looks like it could also do with new brake disks (so pads as well)

Chain sprockets about 100 quid for this bike?
Front and back disks 150 quid as a kit? maybe 200?
Pads 50?

lets say 400 quids worth of work for a upwardly rounded figure.

Anyway I thought it was a great price and really into getting it. But, the owner only had it for 3 months, reason to sell it "we just paid for a new kitchen and need the money" Bit odd but ok, the real issue I have is the owner doesnt have the log book and NO service history and no MOT certificates.

I have no idea what the history of this bike is. Simply what you see is what you get...

Says the V5 and sorn is in his name and Im sure hes not lying about that.

Was I right to walk away?

Is no service history a big red flag that you just dont ignore?

Let me know what you think

Service history - I assume it has none and has been flogged hard.

MOT - Easy to check online with reg (as well as tax/SORN status).

V5 *or* V5C. Not fussed which, as long as the details are right. Won't buy without unless I know the person well, I hve bought several, but I knew both the bikes and people.

The fact the £650 bike becomes £1050 when it's put right puts me off, never mind the rest of it.

What does one that's ready to ride without any warning signs go for?

Not too fussed about service history and/or lack of mot, but, no log book is a red flag for me.

Service history, well, like many on here, if you do your own servicing, great, and you can keep your own records, but, would those records be worth anything in a sale, can what's recorded be proved.

All my bikes have been sold without any service history, baring some where i kept the details from when first purchased.

No log book though, then you'd need to carry out plenty of checks to make sure it's not stolen.

V5 is logbook.

Service history is the thing that other people get the dealer to stamp. I've seen just as many dealer fuckups that I'm really not bothered by it. You usually get a good idea when talking to the seller.

Hell no that wouldn't bother me. TBH going by the pics that bike's a good deal so long as you dontt mind it being an import.

Is it an import? How can you tell?

And if it is, whats the downside?

Clock's in KMH.

Might get a loading on insurance and a lower value plus the headlamp might be illegal but at £650 to buy what looks like a nice little bike I could suffer that.

26,000 miles and sporting aftermarket discs which the ad says are good. Are you sure the brakes need doing?

I wouldn't even think of buying anything from gumtree in the first place.

Why, just out of curiosity?

Off the top of my head, vehicles I've bought from gumtree/ebay:
£300 Scooter - gumtree (no real problems)
£250 GPz (project) - gumtree (no real problems)
£300 Ford galaxy (listed as non runner, dodgy relay repaired) - ebay (easy fix)
£700 VFR (owned for almost 4 years now) - gumtree (needed new battery which previous owner paid for)
£550 CBR600f - ebay (no real problems)
£1400 (+£115 delivery) ZX9R - ebay (no real problems)
£400 Ford Mondeo - gumtree (ripped off for £400)
£540 Ford Mondeo - gumtree (needed new starter after a year)

I've only been able to view 3 of the above before parting with my cash, and as listed above.... I've only been ripped off once

The chain is fucked, but in the photos on the advert it looks ok.... are the photos current?

Those discs looks fine.

If it does match the photos and all it wants for is a chain I'd happily buy that. Quick look at eBay says you can put some MPH clocks on it for the cost of sod all as well.
