PostPosted: 12:58 - 20 Nov 2017    Post subject: Neck Sock / Balaclava recommendations? Reply with quote

Its cold.... and im in Norfolk near the north sea.... so it get VERY cold... 2'c yesterday Very Happy

I normally have a scarf but I was thinking about neck socks or balaclavas.

Looking on ebay, there's A LOT available. But there's also a lot that look really tatty and its rather hard to find a good set...

So can anyone recommend any necksocks or balaclavas?

If i got a balaclava i would want it to be able to open the eye hole and pull it down to expose the head and basically make it a neck sock Very Happy

I use a windproof Forcefield neck warmer, works great, if it's really cold I'll use a fleece A* neck tube underneath.

Merino buff.

If you're looking at a balaclave, don't get anything with a seam either across the top or round the edge of the face opening. Your helmet will press on it and it's like someone drilling a hole in your skull after a bit.

Or grow a large beard.

I use a combination of two:

Nice and thick for the neck, and the 'wings' prevent any leakage around the bottom.

Thinner for up inside the helmet.

Ooh err missus... Embarassed

Wrong anyway.

I bow to The Man and call them Buffs. Or neck tubes. I've got a few free from bike magazines, plus I've bought a few basic Buffs. I'm not keen on the fancy, chunky ones, I just need something to seal the gap between collar and helmet. I also don't like the clammy feel of something covering my nose and chin.

This is amazeballs. I find the fluffy fleecy ones tend to shit out about 1-2 degrees and your neck isn't much warmer than without. Once I tried it, I bought a spare but I haven't needed to replace it, it's stood up really well for something so cheap.

I'm currently using a Bike it Balaclava, they are cheap and very comfortable. I also wear an Oxford Comfy on the really cold days.

As the Bike it balaclava was a success I bought another 4 which will keep me going for years.

The Oxford range of Balaclava's are really good and I've been using them for many years but the latest one's are not so comfortable
which is why I tried the BIKE IT ones. Oxford do a Layers range, it's a thicker more winter type balaclava so no need for a comfy.

Problem is comfort, tried a number of different brands over the years, some are too tight, some are too short and so on.

If you're using a balaclava, I'd wonder how well your helmet fits.

I quite like stuff made with that shiny black windstopper material. My favourite neck buff thing is made of that.

Although mine was half price when I bought it so very cheepz really.

Which leads to the question. Which is more important to your safety. A warm head and neck or a well fitting helmet?

I use a waterproof marine neck gaiter when the going is rough:

https://www.roostersailing.com/pd/Aquafleece-Neck-Gaiter_105314.htm

https://roostersailing.s3.amazonaws.com/p/m/105314.jpg

I removed the drawstring - it's neither necessary nor comfortable combined with a helmet.
