Always used to be able to fit everything I needed on the pillion seat of the ZZR, don't want to fit a top box to the Hornet as my commute takes me over a few high bridges and exposed bits of motorway which is why I did away with the ZZR's,

So, looking at tank bags, needs to be waterproof, fairly easy to plonk in place, need to be able to carry an A4 pack of paper, also needs to be inexpensive as my folks are asking for Christmas present suggestions and this is all I can think of!

Any recommendations?

Any reason why you want a tank-bag over a tailbag?

I ask because personal preference -- as learnt from Borg -- is to have weight central on rear seat.

I'd make an impulse purchase though given J&S still have their 20& off on and sportsbike shop end their sale tomorrow -- if you want to save your folks some pennies that is.

With a tank bag I'd say probably best to view in person and sort of, without leaving the store, look at what would fit your bike. I've got one: on the Arrow it wasn't useable because it was too big and on the Kwak I've never any need for it.

just thinking tank bag will be easier to plonk on and off the bike, currently bungee stuff down to the pillion seat, which is fairly narrow.

If so, consider the Givi Xstream range, with their "Tanklock" quick-release system

You'd want to be careful with that, no? It looks like the fuel tank cap is the base point for all load you then put in the tank bag. Just being sceptical, mind.

I don't like tank bags, always found they got in the way, i would opt for tailbag all the time. The whole taking off to access petrol tank i found annoying. Even looking at Givi or SWmotech that have quick release ones they still have to come off. I use Kriega luggage and its compatible with pretty much every bike.

Tank bags can be really useful, especially with a clear pocket on the top, which was extremely handy before sat navs. Also great for having quick access to things like cameras, or for sticking your wallet/purse and other handy to have at hand items. It cab be a faff filling up with a tank bag in place, but you soon get used to it. The biggest issue is the increased potential to damage the finish on the tank, so, you'll need some of the non slip rubber webbing in place before putting the back on.

Personally, I haven't used a tank bag for quite some time, usually having top boxes, or full luggage systems in place, and sat nav's attached for when needed. However, it was great when I did the run up to to John O'Groats, around Scotland and the Lakes.

Yes plenty of advantages, but ease of access is tops, get to stuff without having to get off the bike for a kickoff, also, a clear pocket on top of a tailbag, has no use whatsoever, on a tank bag, a multitude of uses

My tank bag flew away. Was magnetic. It departed at 80+... Strapped at the rear or a top box. People ride fully loaded with top boxes all over the country and beyond.

i don`t know how you fastened yours but mine is secured.. both by folding over the flap & attachin the magnets to a ferrous base plate and by trappin flaps , magnets and all between the seat and plate ...

it will not come loose @ 80mph i can assure you. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the various points of view for tank bag vs tail pack,

the see through pocket would be nice for maps, although most of my riding is to and from work / my parent's and the occasional run up to the lakes where I know the layout of the towns and main roads very well anyway.

the tanklock system is a no go, it's not produced for my hornet (2001 600FS)

with regards the finish of the tank, it's an ex training school bike so came pre-scratched and pre-dropped so I'm not too upset by some scuffing.

another reason for thinking tank bag is being able to then use the pillion seat for additional luggage in the summer where I've got a couple of weekends away planned

Also handy, for if you have to use toll roads, just keep the money, etc, in the pouch of the tank bag, less hassle that faffing around with jacket pockets etc. I know from experience of using the M6 Toll ... May not as much of a concern for you, as I don't think there are many toll roads up round your area.

I have an SW Motech 'Yukon 90' tankbag.
https://www.labagageriedumotard.com/26040-thickbox_default/sacoche-de-reservoir-etanche-quick-lock-evo-yukon-90-sw-motech-sw-motech-sacoches-de-reservoir-quicklock-evo-sw-motech.jpg

Its one of the quick lock ones, having a brief look, and they look to make the adapter ring for the hornet.

Properly waterproof as its made from that rubberised drybag material, and I like the fact its a semi rigid option, it keeps its shape perfectly when empty for example, waterproofed zips, and a removable clear section for holding a map too.
Sadly, it's not cheap (around £100..) and will only hold an a5, rather than a4 (its 9 litres) No idea if they make a bigger version, but based on my experience with it, I'd definitely recommend them. Thumbs Up

Sadly, i've got an NC now, so no tank ring... Crying or Very sad

Can't fault my Lidl one.

Lomo do one with an option of strap-on or magnetic mount. Not cheap at around £50 but is waterproof.

Why spend more than 50... They are all the same. I'd use the cheapest I could get. Fuck spending money on things to make the bike heavier.

The Lidl one was under £20.

Brand new one on ebay for £17 OP. These are great tank bags. You can get a 12 pack of beer in them when expanded and still do 100mph with just the magnets holding it on (admittedly on a faired bike).

Bagster with a skeleton tank harness, simply the best.

I had the lidl one and it did me proud apart from the nag during fill-ups hence getting the pivot up bagster which must be +20 years old.
Drawback being the cost of 2 items.

Small plus point is the tank cover is bespoke so the fixing points line up in a tidy practical fashion (and the tank doesn't have to be steel).

Thread nick for a few seconds -

I have 3 tank bags I don't want. Tried to give them away before and they are still gathering dust in my garage. I can't be arsed to ebay them for the odd £20 and resultant hassle but there's nothing wrong with them, too good to dump . A Roxter, a B-Wise and and Oxford Sprint.

Anyone want? Praying

I've got an oxford tank/tailpack, the magnets are good on it and it has a strap for the headstock so it won't drift in the wind, or big straps for use as a tailpack. Works well. Mine's on the small side and won't fit an a4 pack of paper though.

I had an expandable frank thomas one briefly, until it hit me in the chest at motorway speed, whereby it completed the journey bunged to the pillion seat and was never used again. On an unfaired bike and only had magnets, no straps.

Personally I'd have a strap or cargo net on any tank bag regardless of whether it came with them, and vastly prefer hard luggage and drybags rok strapped to the pillion seat.
