The radiator on my CBF500 sprung a leak today, it's coming from along the bottom, so I think it's rotten.

I need it tomorrow, so am going to put some stop leak in there, am I best putting it directly into the radiator rather than bottle? (Never used it on a bike before)

Any other suggestions for a quick fix?

I've been looking for a replacement radiator, there are loads more CBF600 radiators available than there are CBF500 ones. Are they compatable?

The bottle?

That's just for expansion when the bike gets hot. When the bike gets hot it goes into the radiator. This pushes up on the bottom of the radiator cap spring and pushes coolant into the drain pipe.

When the bike gets cold(er) there is no pressure inside the rad to press the spring back up again so it can flow back via gravity.

So if you stick anything into the expansion bottle it won't move until the bike gets hot and then cools off.

As to radiators as somebody who borked a CBR one. Avoid the company from Chadderton. It's actually a company in Shenzhen. The rads are nice however the direction of the piping is sometimes different.

They list a CBR600FX radiator as a CBR600F4i radiator. It's different as the expansion tank run off is sideways on the F4i and it is forward on the FX and FY models. They also strangely need the temp sensor hole to be drilled and tapped yourself.

Myself I've mated VFR, CBR rads to my old NTV before. It's easier on a naked bike as you have more clearance. Myself I'd just look at the number of inlets and how tall / wide it is. I also ran my CBR600 as a total loss system for a few days while waiting for my radiator. I wouldn't recommend it.

Thanks, I suspected the expansion bottle wouldn't be the right place on this. It's worked on cars but I think the system is different.

It is the Chadderton company I was looking at.

Prices are one hell of a lot cheaper...

Not a lot of them on ebay, I tried to get one a few months ago but they are hard to get hold of.

You might have to end up shelling out over £300 for a new one.

I had a look at some parts fisches.

The difference between the CBF600 and CBF500 is that the CBF600 has a filler cap on the radiator itself. The 500 doesn't.

Also the mounting loops at the top are in a slightly different position.

I'm wondering if I can knock up a little cradle for the 600 rad, to make it fit a 500...

I tipped a bottle of the most expensive coolant system sealer I this morning, K-seal.

As it's raining I can't tell if it's worked. I keep licking the floor but it all seems good.

I have never owned a water cooled bike. However, there are firms that specialise in repairing leaking car radiators, especially if the radiator is metal rather than plastic.

Uh I'm pretty sure most radiators are metal.

The issue generally is the cost of radiator repairs is pretty high that a used part is often competitive in terms of pricing vs repairing.

When the rad repair man wanted nearly £50 to repair my rad (with no guarantee it would work) I bought a used part for £70 instead.

I ended up buying a new rad, yes it was over £300 but it's tax deductible
being self employed. My mechanic tried to get a second hand rad and
failed and there is no aftermarket rad so my choices were limited.

I could of got my rad fixed but I wasn't happy with that option.

There isn't a great deal of CBF500 second hand rads about. Thinking making a new 600 one fit might be the best bet.

I'm unsure I can get away with putting bike parts through my books!
