Cool heads up Thumbs Up

Often wondered what the point of Datatagging is TBH. I thought I'd check their website and it says:
Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) declared that without Datatag fitted, a motorcycle is more than twice as likely to be stolen

Eh? Surely then all you need is a sticker saying it's been Datatagged? Why doesn't everyone have one of those?

Ah now that's a case of lies, damn lies and statistics. It is useful for marking your bike so that your failings , parts or the whole bike can be traced back to you once it's found in bits in a chopshop.

If you are the type to shell out for some datatagging, you are also more than likley to be the kind of bloke that has two alarmed disk locks, abus chain, parks in a secure garage and has a Doberman in the top box, hence the stats. Probably nothing to do with datatool actually making baklaff think twice.

I'm bucking that trend then, the ZZR was datatagged but that was about it.

In the long run, there's a possibility it may help bring a conviction later when the datatag helps show a wheel here and a wiring loom there on shelves in a suspected chop shop is from a stolen bike, but not a direct help to the person who had it fitted.

* To receive your free item you must live, work or park your bike in the City of London.

Hmm, I wonder how they're going to check this? I happen to work about 500m South of City of London just over the river. Will have to pop along and see if I can blag it... Also a bit stupid to try and appeal to those that work in the city to go along during working hours... Confused

Stop me if you've heard this, but when I asked ScotPlod how many regions are equipped to test for DataTag (or Alpha Dot etc) and how many convictions they'd obtained using each, they told me that 1) they didn't have that information and 2) they don't even record motorcycle crime as a distinct category.

Might be different in that London, although with the closure of their stolen vehicle unit I wouldn't bet on it.

I never bothered paying DataTag to change the registration on my bike, so I guess they'll be getting in touch with BMW UK to tell them the good news. Perversely, the older it gets, and the less likely I am to make a theft claim, the more incentive I have to get it registered to me on the tiny off-chance that it makes its way back to me.

However, the tag is the only actual deterrent, so you might as well just get that stuck on your bike first then ride off.

"Of course I park in the city i parked there this very morning as it happens"...

Maybe they will use the anpr drag but I doubt it.
I thought it silly at first but then realised, most office types may be able to blag a couple of hours off work in the morning, there will be a great deal of coffee shop workers, pubs etc that will be starting a bit later and for long distance commuters , many would not come into London on a day off, coming in a few hours earlier and extening the day generally led of a pain

What I took from this thread is that there are so few police stations remaining that the popo have to host their events at fire stations.

I've never, ever, not even once, read a story from somebody that said their bike was recovered thanks to datatag. Never.

Also my fazer had datatag (unregistered) and it got nicked and charred all the same.

Oh wait, that must be it, the scrotes must be checking the database to see if they're registered. Confused

Between office hours on a workday? I'd imagine the only people to turn up were the odd delivery scooterist. All the people with the sort of bikes generally stolen to be parted (like me) were probably at work :/
