One of my lads gave me his old lappy, a Sony Vaio VPCE1Z0E
running win 10/64
Speccy tells me it has a Sony motherboard and intel havendale/clarkdale
HM55 chipset
AMI bios version R0300Y8 from 2010

I upgraded the memory to 8GB and fitted a new battery and its running fine

Thing is, I tried to get into the bios and it's asking for a password
I hit enter hoping it had no password to no avail
Today I rang him to ask what it was and he had no idea as he'd never gone into the bios
and if he ever knew it he's forgotten it by now.

OK I know I can carry on regardless, but it's bugging me I cant get in the bios
(a bit like having a car where you can't open the bonnet)
Googling suggests its stored in an eeprom so battery removal won't reset it
It's way out of warranty and I'm at least the second owner so Sony wont help
and I really don't fancy coughing up dosh if I can do it myself

Any cunning wheezes chaps?
or pointers to software ( read freeware) crackers that won't give it bad aids?

TIA

Any sign of a cunningly named jumper you can bridge on the motherboard that'll reset it?

I wish, but googling suggests that's not an option
I had the fecker apart to clean the fan and repaste the heatsinks
and don't recall seeing one then
I think that while it's old, it's not old enough to be that easy
Currently looking here
https://dogber1.blogspot.co.uk/2009/05/table-of-reverse-engineered-bios.html

and possibly getting a new bios chip from Ebay/Netherlands

Unlucky.

Is replacing the chip a re-soldering job? If that were me, I think i'd just live with the locked BIOS until I absolutely had to access it.

https://biospassword.eu/buy-passwords/sony-instant-passwords/

You can use that site, it's payment by paypal, so I assume you can get your money back if it doesn't work.

Try this first:

I've never had to do it with a laptop, but don't you just remove the CMOS battery for about 30 seconds to reset the bios (including passwords).

Whoo hoo! dunnit !
I'm in
fuck you Sony

I Installed the python library from the dogber1 site above
ran the script and
it translated the 12 digit number to a one time password

I know I could have just used it as is but not being able to access the bios was bugging me
I found there's very little to play with when you're in mind you
but its the principle of thing dammit now I wont have to have a screaming fit and flounce about bashing it against the wall

Thanks for the suggestions

Wrong. I think now you should have a screaming fit and bashing it against the wall just to show who the master is. Video proof required Smile
