New to the forum so I'm not quite sure if this is the right place to be posting this however I need urgent help! My bike has recently starteded stuttering when I accelerate or even rev to/past 5k and feels although the engine just cuts out for half a second each jolt. I'm new to motorbikes and unfortunately clueless as to how they work. It feels like maybe the fuel isn't being used properly as soon as you accelerate. I tried starting the bike earlier and it would not start with the clutch in, although it would start in neutral. If anyone's has any ideas as to what the problem may be it would be a lifesaver to know.

FYI: It has been very cold recently so that may be a contributing factor to it, however the bike had been fine in the cold before, it just suddenly became weird one day riding it home.

Could be the side stand cutout switch, if there's a loose connection you'll get stuttering if the vibes hit right.

If not, is it fuel injected or carburettor? If you don't know, what year is it?

At a guess, I would chance at 'User Error'. but we aren't clairvoyant you know!

Shaggy asked if it was carb or FI & what 'model' year it was.. so Oh-Kay, it's FI... what year it came into your possession, doesn't really help narrow down the model year very much! Help us help you here, mate!

Stuttering sounds like a fueling issue.. could be anything from there being crud in the fuel-tank, through the injector being gummed up, with potential electrical and mechanical maladies in between, such as the ECU not getting signal from the lambda sensor in the exhaust, or the throttle position sensor being dirty or the ECU tripping to 'limp-home' mode for any of a variety of other reasons.

A-N-D could be utterly un-carburetion related.... the valve clearances could be out.... when was it last properly serviced and had its tappets adjusted?

What state is the exhaust in?Is it leaking or blowng by the exhaust port? Is there a hole in the exhaust pipe any-where? Has the exhaust pipe got a big dent in it, or anything?

Might not be caused by the engine; you could have a siezed link in the chain, or an oval back brake drum, and are inadvertently slightly 'riding' the rear brake, or the brake's binding. or 'something' like that.

Start at the top, and base line the issues for further diagnostics; gt the haynes manual, work through the entire list of recommended user service procedures.

-Drain the petrol tank and clean or replace the fuel filter.
-Check/clean/replace the air-filter
-Get a new spark-plug
-Check adjust the tappet clerances
-Check adjust the cam-chain tension
-Change the engine oil
- clean drive chain - check state o sprockets.. adjust drive chain tension & lube chain, replace C&S if necessary
- Check throttle cable adjustment, clean/lube
- Check clutch cable adjustment, clean lube
- etc etc etc anything else on the list in the manual

THAT lot 'done' there's a very very good chance that the 'problem' will simply disappear.. If NOT... then you will have eliminated all the 'silly' questions before you begin, of what it cant be, so by process of elimination, IF problem persists, YOU stand a much better chance of finding the cause, and fixing it, than we do, by voodoo.. like I said, unfortunately we aren't clairvoyant!

Could also be water in the fuel. Have a look in the tank with a torch. Water would tend to settle to the bottom and appear like a "bubble" under the fuel.

My £££ is on a bad electrical connection. Making and breaking as you accelerate.

Check all connections.

Then check fueling isues

Water in tank is a good point to eliminate too.

Would go for that too. Electrical load breaking down maybe?
Time to get the voltmeter out, again Rolling Eyes

you have a timing light, if so check for loss of ign at the revs you say.......if no timing light, then get a red neon plug cap and make an adaptor so it fits into the lead and onto the plug. This will give you a good cheap visual indication of ht loss, they don't cost much.

As mike says..........I assume you have checked fuel flow, plug and cap, listened/looked for ht tracking etc etc etc.....

get the red neon and rule out ign loss......

waiting for all the bs remarks about bs..........rule out ht loss and go from there..........report back with findings.
