|
|
Hi chaps,
I'm having a bit of a quandary as I don't know the ins and outs, and have a few questions as I know you lot on here know your onions..
I'm reading all sorts everywhere because everyone has their own opinion on insurance and it sort of differs with everyone...
Last Saturday 16th December I came back to my car parked in a multi-storey shopping centre car park like this, with of course, no note left;

https://preview.ibb.co/cEjUC6/20171216_152554.jpg
https://preview.ibb.co/kOxo5R/20171216_160227.jpg
Deep deep joy.
Just to paint the picture -
I'm 24, nearly 7 years NCB (believe this is protected whatever that means) on a modified specialists insurance all mods declared fully comp including business use.
To me personally, my NCB is pretty important to me as I can just about insure some half decent cars at my age now.
Anyway, luckily never had an accident touch wood or had to do anything insurance wise so I'm a complete n00b.
Personally, I can't help but feel ideally it would be nice to completely avoid any dealings with insurance. I'm hoping a new wing / bumper and away I go, hopefully approx. £200-250 using 2nd hand panels. A.k.a not worth the hassle.
As soon as it happened I went to the security desk and asked them to check the CCTV, they indicated they had something however couldn't tell me any details due to 'data protection' and told me to get my insurance to contact them - Nahhhhhh
Anyway, bent it all back as best as I could, still scrapes a bit but got it home, and reported it to 101 non emergency. Blah blah.
Emailed the CCTV people again quoting my URN and then ta-da they found the offending vehicle, put the video of them smashing into my car along with a still image of the driver and registration plate. Perfect.
He said I could go and pick it up whenever, £10 charge. Picked it up this morning and played it. Car that hit me was a large 4x4, parks next to me, 2 males get out and a woman with a baby, they return from shopping and that's when my car gets hit.
https://preview.ibb.co/h7praR/PAINT.jpg
I've checked the car on vehicle smart
It's a 63 plate L200, MOT expired end of September.
It's taxed and showing as insured, but as we all know - this will surely be invalid without a current MOT?
https://preview.ibb.co/jOTypm/20171220_2217391.jpg
I cant help but feel it would be nice to get them prosecuted for;
Leaving the scene of an accident
Potentially no MOT / Insurance?
However, I went to the Police station earlier as advised and asked if they could prosecute without me going through insurance as I'm not interested in the hassle / comebacks / especially the PITA if they aren't covered and it comes back to me in any way shape or form.
Oh, and she said because I got the CCTV that's illegal?
(Even if they are covered, what happens if their assessors come round and right my car off and value it at £100 and a mars bar?) Not worth it surely.
Not sure if I'm right here or not. Is there anything I can do?
He entered the car park the wrong way, drove the opposite way you are supposed to getting into the space, and exited the car park the wrong way after hitting my car. (Clear arrows on the floor) And has no MOT.
I hardly think he's the type to offer me some money nicely. I know I could request the address from the DVLA but not sure what use this is.
TL;DR
Hit whilst not even in the car. Offender drives off.
Obtain CCTV.
Offending vehicle has no MOT. Have reg, have footage, have face.
If we do this the hard way and I report everything via the Police including my insurance details, is there any way this situation could potentially fuck me over / increase my insurance costs in the future?
Because as of my chat with the Police earlier, it seems it's actually easier for me to not report it and fix it myself. What a system..
Cheers as always. ____________________ 07' Honda Hornet now full powaah! My guide on performing an oil change! |

If you can get the Police to enter their caravan site and apprehend them, then you're doing better than most.
L200, two blokes a woman and a kid?? My money is on them being caravan utilising nomadic travellers.
Very best of luck with this. In your boat I'd fix it myself. I fessed up to an accident I had back in April, stoving in the
back of our car. My fault entirely, saw a rise in premium on ALL my policies, bikes van and car. Even if it hadn't
been my fault, I'd almost certainly have seen an increase in any case by declaring the incident. They never, ever
miss an opportunity to screw a few more quid out of you, particularly since you need insurance to use a
motor vehicle on public roads. They have you by the short and curlies. Keep them out of it would be my advice.
It wasn't too bad for me in pounds and pence terms because I'm old and live in a decent area. But at 24!!
Lube up pal, it's gonna hurt. Methinks you've been well and truly pikied. Unless your CCTV shows brown faces,
I'm putting my fiver on caravan dwellers. To clarify - declaring even a non fault accident to the insurance vultures WILL
load up your premium. In their eyes you are a higher risk, due to involvement in an incident. Unfair but true. ____________________ Currently enjoying products from Ford, Mazda and Yamaha

IANRB (I am not Rogerborg) but... what's it got to do with your insurance?
https://www.askmid.com/askmidenquiry.aspx - get their insurance details and contact their insurance company directly to get it sorted out. Has to be worth a punt for £4? ____________________ BMW R1100R |

But if you make a claim, you have to declare it for the next 4 years or so (your fault or not), for the sake of a few hundred pounds of repair, it would hardly be worth it
Also, just because it has no MOT, it will not invalidate his/her 3rd party insurance, should you want to make a claim off him/her
Surely there are plenty of MX5 parts knocking around these days, it's usually the rear wheel arches/sills that rust through first, so finding a front wing and bumper shouldn't be too tricky
Also, protected NCD means that you can make up to 3 claims in a set period (1-3 years i think) and not lose your NCD, but as above, you will still have to declare any claim made, so you will still end up out of pocket one way or another ____________________ Current Bike: Honda CG125 ES4 // Honda CB600FS Hornet // Triumph Street Triple R |

/thread.
No need to mention it to your insurance, declare it next year as a no-fault accident, full recovery, NCD not-affected, wiznae me. You'll probably still get dry bummed, mind.
Complaint to Po-Po for being lied to. What offence have you committed by asking for data? What offence has car park committed by disclosing data for the purposes of the prevention and detection of crime (leaving the scene of / not reporting an accident)? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

But I was a passenger.
On confused.com if you tick the "yes" box, it then asks you to select the description that best matches the circumstances of the incident and every option is about claims made against your own insurance policy.

If claims made against other drivers are meant to be declared then which option am I meant to choose to tell them that I made a claim as a passenger? |

Dafuq do I know about insurance?
I do fraud detection for insurance.
I know nothing about how insurance works. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
