Afternoon
Wanted to buy something so that the bike can be lifted off the ground, for swapping tyres, chain cleaning etc

To my horror i found out that the only place i can rest scissors jack is on the pipes
D pro scissors lift 500kg is what ive bought instead of front and rear paddock

Is it safe to try and lift with say rubber mat or a wooden plank inbetween? Is there a danger of bending or cracking them?

Cheers

Is this what you have bought?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dirty-Pro-Motorcycle-Motorbike-Workshop/dp/B01NAXMNAN

You mean you can't get it to sit on the frame rather than the exhausts?

I wouldn't lift a bike on its exhaust, personally.

Yep thats the one.
Centerstand isnt a cheap option even though its ideal
Wanted to avoid paddock stands hence wanted a jack/lift

Only option is to rest jack on the 4 pipes on the underbelly. Weight should spread over 4 of them but i still doesnt feel comfortable enough to go ahead

Do you have any roof beams? The other method is to tie a ratchet strap around the headstock of the bike and to put something under the bike. The rope/ratchet takes some of the weight and the milk crate or whatever under takes the rest.

If you want super cheapness then there is another solution. Turn the footpegs upside down and put a car jack under each one or a milk crate or whatever.

The foot pegs are rated for about 100kilos each.

Itchy that sounds a bit too extreme for my liking 😁
Paddock stands seem to be the only option now, any recommendations on those at all?

Because lots of folk have 'lost it' trying to get a bike on or off paddock stands. Embarassed

Although possibly prohibitively expensive, the ABBA stand is a much sweeter alternative. And front wheel removal is much easier.

And they can be augmented by the wee wheeled doofer too. Which lets you 'glide' the beast around as though it's weightless. 😊

Well if he doesn't buy paddock stands then he's never going to learn how to use them without dropping the bike. Razz

I'd much rather put the bike on paddock stands than balance it on a scissor lift. Laughing

Get someone to give you a hand the first few times you're put it on the stands and take it off the stands, it's nice and easy once you've got the hang of it.

Buy a piece of wood.

https://youtu.be/jXRNH3T3P_E

You can do the front wheel if you put it under the sump instead.

Get yourself an Abba stand and the fittings for your bike. They're simple to use, one person operated and very stable and secure. Thumbs Up

Made to lift one end at a time of cruisers I believe?

Why not paddock stands, which are designed for your kind of bike?

Or if a little more to spend, go for an Abba stand that lets you remove other parts of the bike like the swingarm.

I really like my '1jac'; but they're not cheap and the cheaper copies are apparently questionable.

(I also fancy one of the less portable drill-operated ones that can go higher.)

Have you had the chance to play with one of them as they look quite good?

Nope; only the said 1jac, which is a similar principal, but operated via a lever so doesn't go nearly as high.
(1jac also holds just on one side, so works nicely for trackdays as quick to attach - but you do need to add one extra bit to the bike.)

100% this.

the problem with a centre lift is a) you don't want to support the bike on the exhausts, they're designed for trail bikes with low frames. and b) it'll be unstable.

paddock stands are ok but you won't be able to remove front forks etc..

abba stand with the front lift addon will be all you'll need. stable, secure and very easy to use.

Guys i am looking at motoGp front and rear paddocks from sportsbikeshop. In general they are universal or would i need extras for it to work?
Never done any work on the bike apart from air filter/coolant/oil change and some minor fairings installation

You need to be very careful with paddock stands made from tubular material, low quality ones will twist and bend and generally fall apart. If getting that style then make sure that the ones you get are suitably braced and aren't shitty quality.

Personally I'd go for ones made of of box section. I've used Renthal ones in the past and they were good, these ones also look more than acceptable:

https://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorcycle/rear-stands/warrior-alloy-box-front-and-rear-stand-pair
https://www.mandp.co.uk/black-alloy-paddock-stand-pair.html

For rear paddock stands which have a hook like the ones above, you need to get bobbins which screw into the swingarm. This is one which doesn't need bobbins, it looks cheap and nasty but it's just an example of the two different ways rear paddock stands support your bike.

I'd suggest reading the customer reviews on the sportsbikeshop page for the MotoGP paddock stands as several people have had them break. Wink

If it's a factory 4-2 exhaust system then it'll likely be fine. Some bikes (the Hayabusa for example) are designed for jacking under the exhaust pipes.

Other than that - abba stand.

I use one of those to lift my Africa Twin. I set the sticky up bits the same distance apart as the unused brackets for the centre stand on the bike and lift it using those. Can be done single handed in that case.

The ABBA stand is more flexible than paddock stands IMO. I've had both the front and rear end in bits at the same time with the basic ABBA and a small trolley jack. Great bit of kit.
