Personally I think that it should be against the law to celebrate 'Christmas' unless you genuinely believe in the Christian version of God, have been 'dipped' in a sink by a vicar and go to church regularly. I don't, haven't been and only go into a church for kid's carol services, weddings etc. Each to their own. I also think it should be illegal to mention or advertise Christmas before 24th December, and that on this date families that qualify should send one member out to purchase a goose/turkey or similar whilst the rest stay indoors roasting chestnuts and listening to carols on Radio 4. Anything else is plain crass. Happy Christmas ya bastards!!!

I believe its origins are pagan, but yeah it became a commercial and non-religious event a long time ago. I think have it for kids if you must, leave adults out of it.

Wouldn't bother me as like most sane and secure people I don't believe in sky fairies.

Currently not that sane or secure....but you can't have everything.

It's a winter festival, adopted by Christianity with made-up stories about their particular sky-ghost.

Ne'er a truer word spoken.

Winter solstice celebrations start today, peak on the 25th and then wind down a bit... Thumbs Up

It goes in cycles for me....

My memories of it as a kid are magical (probably rose tinted over time) but after that it just became a drinking session.

It changed when I had kids of my own and I saw them enjoying it followed by another session of 'couldn't be arsed' when they had grown up.

Now with the grandkids at the age to enjoy it, it's a bit of fun again.

Yes, it's commercialised but what do you expect in todays dysfunctional society where you feel it necessary to put a muslim family in a Christmas advert just because it earns you 'diversity' points.

A group of us meetup each winter/summer solstice and have a jam session, been doing it for at least 20 years.

This year is the first time in ages that it's not on due to an outbreak of lergy. The usual 'venue' is a detached property so cramming +12 people anywhere else is tricky at short notice.

Twiddlin' me thumbs here. Neutral

I think there's better festivals and vaguely religious based events with more interesting goings on and stuff to do.
As said Christmas for adults is largely a drinking session now, but I feel short changed as I'd rather have a huge Street party type event with friendly neighbours and miles of fold up tables full of tasty well made food.

The festival of light, and Easter/lent, and the Chinese thingy where they set fire to half the city with those flying lantern things sound more interesting.

I've only heard all the stories of events like Coronation day, the silver jubilee and the Spencer/Charles wedding etc. But they sounded much more fun, and as well as everyone cooking up tasty food to feast on, there was a strange concept of neighbours and streets getting on, being friends and having a great time all day&night.

I'd have some of that if it was ever on offer or existed in another world somewhere?

Because 'Everyone's welcome' Mr Bear? I mean the muslim brotherhood were so inclusive and delighted when Amir Khan
('s PR people told him to) put up a Christmas tree

I would have no objection to the advert if the actual ethic was 'everyones welcome' rather than 'look at us being super PC, aren't we good', but we know that there has to be diversity in everything we see (even in a nominally Christian context) or someone will get their knickers in a twist.

I really miss working at the Royal Mail sorting office.

Did get me thinking what the first one was like, but none of us would the forget the summer when the police got called. Drumkits were out for a while until I took an electronic set. Improvise-adapt-overcome-get mashed off tits-occasionally play something in time in tune.

I refuse to celebrate Christmas as I don't believe in christ
since my kids were over the age of 18 I stopped buying pressies
I don't send cards
the tree is still in the box in the cupboard but the Mrs will put it up in a day or so

only thing I enjoy about Dec 25th is I get to cook a large family meal
and the Mrs can't moan if I have a few beers in the afternoon Laughing

I've not given a present to anyone in over 6 years
I tell people not to buy one for me, I don't shave so don't need smellies, I don't wear Boxers and I wear Boot socks
so that rules out the normal sh*t that I got Laughing

That sounds an excellent idea, which I'm going to adopt myself next year.
Tell me, what flavour do you have, or does everyone just bring their own?

That's exactly the point of it, a festival to celebrate the fact that we've had the shortest day of the year and we're on the return to longer days, the path to spring and to break up the drudgery of the cold miserable weather.

(That's where the immigrants that arrived in NZ & Oz got it all wrong, they took the same traditions/dates with them - when really they ought to have started doing it in June to break up their shit weather)

More fool you, then. I'm firmly atheist but I still enjoy the holiday. Don't let the god-botherers take away something fun intended to celebrate [the above] - they just hijacked it at a time when people thought the earth was flat and didn't know any better, it doesn't make it theirs.

Roll on the longer days... And yes, I will have that third mince pie and litre of Baileys, thankyouverymuch.

We pagans are more than happy to let the Christians join in our winter festival. You don't need to believe in a sky fairy, you just need to celebrate the sun once again winning its battle against the darkness.

I personally think Christmas should be a celebration of Joseph, the poor naive fool who stood by his missus when she was clearly up the duff by another man. The fact that 2000 years later we're still watching our kids act out the birth before going home to sit next to an illuminated tree in the belief that "God did it" serves to illustrate perfectly how a little white lie can really run away from you quickly if you're not careful.

In 2000 years time religions will be based on Shaggy's "It Wasn't Me"
