Good deal on what is apparently a good quality tap and die set. It'll definitely be better than my Chinese shit one I have now so might get one myself Thumbs Up

Anyone know the advantages or disadvantages of a HSS kit rather than a carbon steel set?

High speed steel is better for cutting. It keeps it's edge better and is harder.

It's also easier fuck if you don't use it right. Plenty of cutting fluid, clear the swarf and keep them clean and they will last a lifetime.

You can't say that about carbon steel.

However with that set I'm surprised they are solid and not split dies. That means they are more like thread chasers than thread cutters. Of course you can cut a thread with them but it will never be as good as if you had used a split die.

Do they even make a decent new-production die stock these days? I've found when looking for quality tools, the old tools are great.

Well you could argue that's becaused only decent quality 'old tools' are still around to use; any crappy 'old tools' wouldn't have survived until now

Have to watch buying old taps or dies as someone may have been using them on hardened parts and although they may appear new they could be fucked.
Removing broken taps isn't my idea of fun.
Most new stuff has tendency to be made from the finest Chinesium but even branded tools that may have been quality name in past are not as good as they used to be.

Wotcha.

I went out and bought one - mainly for cleaning up existing damaged threads.

Used tap in anger yesterday, all good.
Not tested the drill bits though.

Old Thread Alert!

The last post was made 6 years, 78 days ago. Instead of replying here, would creating a new thread be more useful?
