No real access to tools as I'm miles from home..

Battery died on my bike last night at Newcastle, charged it up and it's been fine.. got to weatherby and my rev counter went to 0 then shortly after speedo did too, all dash lights went odometer went off... pulled over left ignition on, ripped heated grip wiring out and disconnected headlight bulb and rode for 20 miles at 85~ pulled into weatherby services and turned it off and no power to start it...

Headlight works just very dim, starter does nothing..

Must be charging a bit as the lights would have been dead I've done 90 miles with grips, headlight, phone charger on so it would be flat as fuck.

Now and then speedo comes back on then shortly after rev counter pops up but then dies again a while later..

Any clues?

On the vtr

If we assume the charging system is OK then it sounds like
poor connections.
Intermittent faults are hard to diagnose in a workshop let alone at a distance, can only suggest you do a visual check of connections/grounding/fuse condition/wiggle the wiring etc
and get a meter on it if poss.
It's all guesswork without one.

Get the voltmeter out and start testing, like the rest of us would do. As the guys say, could be a corroded wire, earth, or faulty RR. Either way you need to start doing at least some elementary tests to eliminate possible causes/problems. If the battery did die, it wasn't being charged properly, start tracing back from there. Also, you'll probably need to give the battery an overnight charge to get it back up to full capacity.

Do they just burn out on their own or could the charging circuit need testing?

If it's burnt out a full electrical test ought to be performed in case the alternator is overcharging. A new R/R may get the bike running again but if the underlining problem remains, that's when things could start getting pricey! I would test the alternator output and all earth points first, then fit the new R/R.

On the other hand Reg/rectifiers are not too dear and a common thing to fail.
By all means check voltages after fitting replacement.
