https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/02/intel_cpu_design_flaw/

User space processes could potentially read kernel space memory.

Patches are incoming but they come with upto 30% performance hit, woops.

Good job Intel's CEO sold all them shares at the end of November Wink

You can tell how bad a vulnerability is by the sperg rage of the Lunix hippies. This one is a full on table-headbutting thrashfest. I smell a class action suit in the making.

I have just had a good giggle reading comments from some oicks who are very smug that they have AMD chips rather than Intel. I wonder where they think their AMD chips came from in the first place? Laughing

The question is how long have various intelligence agencies known about this? Laughing

Seems AMD chips are vulnerable to the main "Spectre" problem anyway. As are ARM and Intel so basically everything.

I'll fire up the ol' Spectrum then.

Big question is: update or no-update? Is the cure worse than the condition for Joe Homeuser?

Do you have a Sinclair compatible joystick and tape recorder for that?

Is it time to panic and start eating people yet? Apparently Intel came out with the news, knowing patches weren't ready, because leaked info' was affecting their share price Neutral

From what I can gather an update for the Intel 'Meltdown' flaw was released yesterday for Win' 10, Win' 7 & 8 will be updated on the 9th. Firefox and Edge have already been patched, Google are waiting until they release Chrome 64 on the 23rd Confused Coincidentally I installed Firefox 2 days to debug something, I'll probably stick with it for now Whistle

The 'Spectre' flaw which includes AMD/Atom we'll just have to live with... so take a hammer to any computers, phones, tablets now!

Why would it be necessary to patch specific applications? This is an issue with kernel memory management.

BIOS is on its way out. UEFI is the new standard and there will be no BIOS in Intel chipsets past 2020. At least that's what they claimed before all this happened. So, enjoy MS:DOS while you can, as that thing needs BIOS to run, or virtualization, or just keep an older board.

Oh, and just to keep the theme here, UEFI is also a scary thing IF exploited right. Wink

My AMD from 2011, which wasn't cutting edge then, has UEFI but my Intel system's a couple years older. I wonder if it'll get a patch Smile Didn't MS DOS support go yonks ago? I even had to patch an XP installer to get it to install/run on my AMD system.

So lying agreements were signed 6 months ago [boiling piss emoticon]
....and a sizeable performance hit when the kernel gets a plaster applied.

Oh joy.

I'm wondering why announce the Spectre flaw IF nothing can be done about it. Stinks a bit of Intel screaming it's not just us.

Apple are included in this as well, I expected so on the Mac side (as they use Intel processors) but wasn't sure about mobile devices.

What annoys me about Apple is they apply fixes to their latest software update and say job done. Yeah brilliant for people on older software or those running a terminal ver. of iOS.

Some good news for gamers (for now at least): https://youtu.be/_qZksorJAuY

TL; DR:
1) Microsoft already released the patch
2) The only pefromance hit so far is in the sequential Read and Write
3) Gaming performance not affected
4) Average consumer won't notice a thing; Data centers won't be happy
5) We still expect the microcode update from Intel (which could make things worse)
