TLDR: Got rid of SKY, would still like to watch the Discovery Channel, brother in law can do this via Kodi on his original Fire Stick. Thinking about buying something that will handle Kodi - Would the new Alexa Fire Stick be up to the job or would something else be better. Don't wish to spend a fortune.

You've no idea what you've started Very Happy My (older) fire TV stick been fine with Kodi, except for a minor meltdown. I'd probably go for something more powerful now, given Krypton and whatever the latest ver. is called being more demanding than Jarvis (my phone even struggles with it).

Not sure how the new stick would compare, it has an updated processor AFAIK. I wouldn't pay a lot for one if you did want to try it out, I paid £20 (for example), no way are they worth £40.

Raspberry Pi 3 works well for me. £50 on Amazon for a starter kit which has everything you need, cheaper ways if you shop about a bit.

Also it's early days (just been released) but if you have an Xbox One it now has Kodi.

I use a RP2B. Works fine for me. Ballache to set up though.
Now I'm thinking of getting an Android based system. Some of the Shanghai Specials are about £30 and are getting positive reviews.

I'd be tempted by one of the (many) kodi boxes on ebay.

Under £30 gets you something you can have a play with;

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4K-PRO-KODI-17-4-Quad-Core-Android-7-1-Smart-HD-TV-Box-WIFI-Media-Sports-Movies/202148530394?hash=item2f10fdc8da:g:7iIAAOSwg8taM5CL

If you really get into it, you could upgrade to pretty much anything that has a CPU and HDMI port.

I run kodi on a mac mini, but rarely use it anymore. I've gone back to the old school (freeview and tpb)

I've been running it on an Nvidia shield TV for a while.
Wasn't many devices at the time capable of 10bit HVEC.

The android TV side isn't bad either. Game stream was a bit hit and miss though. Give up on that in the end.

Thanks

Yes, new firestick with Alexa does work.
Need ADBfire to upload stuff on there but is easy enough.

I've been running it on an Xbox one (and a PC) but really just using it on the Xbox one.

Though it is a bit of a pain in the neck, I often have to change, remove or replace add ons quite a lot.

Planning on messing about with a raspberry pi 3 thingymabob soon

Issue with NOW TV is how they split the films/series, I kinda like both and Netflix/Prime have a mix. I tried a film trial a while back and it was good, probably not £10 p/m good. I don't know if they still do but apparently they put time limits on 'boxsets'.

They have some pretty good introductory offers though, 6 months Entertainment and Cinema for £51.

Or if you keep an eye on Argos et al, you can pick up the box with 6 months ent. pass (cinema is shit IMO) for about £25, and then sell the box?

You can. I got a NowTV box when they came out for a tenner. It's ok but no Kodi so...

I've just fired mine up to check if you could still get developer mode on it (smart box worked long after the cheapo box). It doesn't work no more Crying or Very sad

They do change the goal posts which is the downside but other systems probably do the same.

I am having a bigger problem than the OP, I watch Universal Channel a lot and if I ditch sky I will not be able to watch that channel unless I get Virgin media, Talk Talk or BT... You can't even view it on Freesat.
SO for now Sky is my best option.

Or pay £40ish a year for a good IPTV service/Kodi Plugin.

No restrictions on Prime/Netflix so you can sub>binge>cancel anytime you want. They do change a lot of film content which can be annoying, as you find something in your watch list isn't available anymore. I assume it's for licensing reasons rather than them being dicks.

I find that the "Kodi official" youtube plug in for Kodi, is better than the xbox app or my smart tv app

And yet Fire TV/stick users have been going into meltdown about losing the YouTube app Smile
