Regrettably, the bike has been left untouched for the last month...outside.

I've gone to move it today, but it will not budge anywhere. It looks as though the front brakes are stuck on.

How do I go about taking the callipers off to clean them, if I cannot even move the front wheel. So bad that I was able to lift the bike off the ground by holding one of the front wheel spokes.

Yes, I am suitably ashamed of myself.

There's probably nothing wrong with the calipers the pads will be rusted to the disks. Give the front tyre a few good clouts with a big hammer right on the front. Take care not to hit the wheel or the mudguard.

I'll give it a go Thumbs Up

The other bike moved straight away without any problems, and I've not had this issue in the past, so it was a little worrying at first.

Spray the calliper with brake cleaner then try rolling the bike forward, if that doesn't work break out the G clamp and push the pistons in and pray... Once you get the wheel moving remove the calliper, strip it down.

Had this on my CB250 during winter months, brake cleaner does the job but I did find the sliders needed a grease up.

I'm not sure anyone is stupid enough to WD40 their brakes.
If they are, I've done the world a favour.

Agree with Pete. One of the few times a bit of brute force and ignorance is called for. Laughing

Doesn't say much for the bonding of the pad material. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it must have been defective. If it came off with you pushing the bike, there's no way it would have stayed on if you stood on the brake at 100mph.

I thought no one would be stupid enough to weld the front sprocket to the output shaft of the gearbox. So it would not surprise me if anyone did the WD40 treatment.

After all, the worst that can, and will, happen is swollen seals. Which gives you/op/anyone a great opportunity to rebuild the calipers. Razz

Belt the callipers with a mallet at 90 degrees to the direction of travel.

Ha, i remember years ago a thread on a yank muscle car forum, where a guy tried to flush his engine with tap water after someone on the forum told him to do it as an obvious joke Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

As far as people could tell it wasn't a troll thread.

EDIT:
and yes he seized his engine solid.

Good idea if you want to bend the aluminium disc carrier.

If the pistons are so seized that the disc carrier bends then the brakes are pretty fucked anyway.

You fucking piece of shite.

No one uses WD-40 on their brakes now-a-days. Shocked

3 IN 1 Oil is what we use now.

Very Happy

Then to clean the 3 in 1 off one simply immerses one's head in a pot of boiling water. Thumbs Up

Once upon a time... it was 'more' common for an unused bikes brakes to rust-on.... bain of metalised pads and cast discs... (mental anguish scream BLUDI-GUZZI!!)
Since stainless discs became the norm, it's not been so common.... but getting more so.... probably chitty non OEM Chinky un-stainless discs to blame
Otherwise, and especuliarly on Honda's, more likely a gummed up floating caliper... tendency is to grab the brake when you grab the bars.. corroded caliper grips disc, corrosion makes it stick there.
Brute force over ignorance can 'un-stick' them, but ht is that calipers probably need an overhaul, & thorough clan de-gunk, and grease.

I am rather loath to use the G-Clamp trick to press piston back into caliper body... if there's enough ali-fir in the caliper and or the piston is sufficiently corroded to stick, whats that crud going to do when forced back past the seals? Good way to promote a failure to my mind... pistons should self retract.

Loose caliper bolts, pry from forks or carrier with a tyre lever or similar, clean and inspect, and work fro there when you can see how bad it is.

No, they are just stuck.

There won't be anything wrong with the discs - until you twat them with a mallet of course.

try a bit of mr sheen on the disk

it will burn off when you use the brakes again but may get enough doen behind the pad to free it off

I'm not joking either I often clean my disks with it

Yeah wax your brake discs. Another world-beating idea. That would be the only circumstance I would advocate smashing them with a mallet afterwards.

The only thing you should deliberately put on brake discs is brake pads.
