Grip the bike with your knees, keep your arms loose, and you'll see very little effect from the wind on the bike's course.
If it was windy enough to actually blow a bike over it'd be so windy you'd have trouble walking in it. |
Coming home from BCF BBQ last year, rode through another storm that hit hardest on the high part of the M6 heading into Cumbria. I had trouble keeping the bike in lane at times, relaxed arms and gripping with the knees notwithstanding. Fortunately, there wasn't much traffic at this point, so I mostly stuck to the windward lane, but found it easier to allow the bike to be drifted into the middle lane in the stronger gusts from time to time. In fact, I couldn't physically keep in lane on a couple of occasions.
I think that kind of shows you can ride in wind that would blow a static bike over, and give you difficulty in walking a straight line. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Sorry but I'm calling bullshit on that one. The wind lifted you and the bike completely off the ground and dumped you 10ft away on the outside lane? I thought I was replying to BodyTard for a second there. |
All I can say is, it was a long time ago, must have been about '87, and that's how I remember it. I was riding a GSXR1100 on the M4, or might have been M5, heading from London down to Cornwall. There's a part on whichever motorway it was where it is cut through a hill, so you are protected from crosswinds through that bit. But when I came out the other side, what I described is what I remember happening. Sorry, no way to prove it, but then I'm not that bothered really. I do know that it scared the living bejaysus out of me, and the bike being picked up is what I recall now, otherwise I probably wouldn't remember anything about it at all. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Never been knocked over, but have been shoved from lane three to lane one on the M5, combination of fully faired two stroke and Oct 1987.
Gave up once at Metalbridge, just north of Carlisle, on the M6.
On a DR600 couldn't keep up any momentum, there were two artics on their sides on the southbound side.
Ground to a stop and hid behind a bit of armco, had to hold onto the bike, even though it was leaning into the wind, on the side stand, it was still going to blow over! ____________________ "Everybody needs money, that's why they call it money!" |

Lower, heavier more powerful bikes are less likely to be affected. Big screens can be problems. Full tuck can reduce effect at speed. Overtaking lorries is one to watch even when wind speed is low. Looking at weather forecast is your first line of defence. Both feet down when stopping is advisable if you can reach! Sideways gaps on bridges etc can produce scary eddies - be ready. A lot of it is about risk assessment. Two wheels can be knocked off vertical for many reasons, not just wind. It's just part of riding - constant awareness of hazards but don't let it spoil the fun. Ride like f*** and think hard whenever you can......beats the onset of biking boredom! I passed my test nearly 50 years ago but still learn something new most days.

Never blown over but was stopped by the Police who had followed me for best part of 2 miles watching me sway from one side of the lane to the other fighting the wind
Stopped me and breathalyzed me as they were convinced I was drunk ____________________ DILLIGAF |

Like quite a few on here, not blown off, but been shunted across lanes a few times. The VTX though, that was astonishing in the wind, no matter how bad it got, never felt like it was a problem on that.
Yesterday around Leicester, well, I guess roughly between north Coventry and Leicester, got pretty well buffeted on the RX-3. Got all the weathers yesterday, well, felt like it !!. It was still snowing when I left Wolves for Leicester, then, it dried out, until I got around the Leicester area, before the wind picked up, then, there was lovely when traveling between sites in Leicester, winter sun, and then on the way home, wind & then rain thrown into the mix !! Anyway I digress.
in short, not blown off, been pretty well buffeted though !! ____________________ Beware what photos you upload, or link to on here, especially if you have family members on them |
