I've been getting around to doing work on the house, just got a new boiler system fitted. Getting new lead alternative on the front porch roof. Now my next job is to do/get the chimney sorted. I've decided instead of actually getting plasterboard and putting that over. I'd rather get it plastered up and then just have the vent at the top, now the plastering I don't mind doing.

However a question for any builders on here or people that have done similar. What is the best way of adding a vent that won't cause too much of a draft in the open gap above.

Image of the fireplace below; old gas pipe is no longer connected.

A plumbers merchants - Plumb Centre or Plumb base should have a flue plate to reduce the opening but still allow ventilation although that can only be used with no fire in place. If your planning to have another fire then the draughting and flueing regulations are specific to the type of fire you buy and you will buy the correct closure plate and spigot or adapter at that time.

Presumably you're not wanting to use the fireplace again (at least any time soon?)

If so, you want to cap the chimney on the roof, to stop rain getting down; but that needs a vent too, to allow airflow.

Cover the fireplace (with brick/plaster or plasterboard) and fit a vent something like this. It wants to be low down (just above skirting board level?) to avoid a leaving a dead space in the fireplace which could get damp.

EDIT: on re-reading, I'm not sure what you're wanting to achieve. Are you covering over the fireplace or leaving it open?

Sound like leave it open, otherwise why not go with the plasterboard option he has declared he won't do.

We removed our old fire and all the lime muck in it to open up a large void which was then boarded out and used for storage. Quite handy for things like PS/wii controllers.

Thank you all just to clarify I'm just leaving it open the flue vent sounds ideal.

What I did was knock a hole through the side of the chimney and putting the vent there out of sight and then fulled the front hole with a bit of breezeblock before putting plasterboard and plaster over the top.

I had no intention of installing a gas heater, it wasn't suitable for an open fire or stove unless lined etc. and I'd recently had central heating fitted.

All in all the nice clean finish looked very good.

As above cap the chimney of or fit a wire dome. You don't want a dead bird rotting in the blocked-up fireplace.
