Hi, All.

I'm a jammy git. Next week I'm travelling to Australia and Tasmania for three weeks with work and in between work commitments I'll have 5 days in Tasmania to doss about. There is a motorcycle hire company in Launceston and I've secured a Thruxton R for 4 days.

Have any of you ridden in Tasmania before? If so, I'd be grateful to read of any advice regarding riding routes, towns / accommodation you'd recommend and things worth stopping to see along the way.

One further thing; who's carried a bike helmet on to a plane as hand luggage before? Any issue? I contacted Etihad who could not have been more vague in their response if they'd tried.

Thank you.

Mark

I've carried a helmet as hand luggage a few times without issues.

Ask the airport you're travelling from rather than the airline. It's the airport who take care of security so it's their decision.

Make sure you make lots of referrences to people having had an extra head removed like "You can hardly see the scar" or "I suppose a lot of people need two helmets when they hire a bike." and stuff like that. Tasmanians love oblique referrences to them being inbred.

Hi, Stinkwheel. Thanks for your response. Sound advice re contacting the airport. I wonder how accommodating the lovely people in Abu Dhabi will be... Thinking

Did wonder why the Thruxton has three grips on the bars.

very jammy

my g/f is tasmanian so I go there a lot but never ridden there. Driven about a lot and tasted all the food beer wine and whiskey and I have no doubt that as a riding tour you will have the best time.

It's not as warm all the time as mainland Ads and the weather can drop a bit so even though it's summer bring an extra layer and a waterproof jacket

Eat as much blue eyed trevalla as is humanly possible

Go to the Tarkine - one day it might not be there

Wine glass bay is pretty speccy
